The Happier Hour: Philosophy To Help Life Suck Less
It’s like the self-help section... only way funnier, smarter, and with booze.
Because life can be hard.
But philosophy is awesome.

Perspectives change. Fads come and go. Decisions are hard. Thankfully, we don't have to reinvent the wheel. All we need is some timeless wisdom for contemporary problems.

The Happier Hour started on December 29th 2017 as a live show in NYC. It was a hit (phew!) and became a monthly show through May of 2018 before taking a summer hiatus to launch The Happier Hour Podcast. The first season of The Happier Hour covered the topic of Resolutions, Love, Rebellion, Money, and Creativity.

What is The Happier Hour?:
Equal parts philosophy and self-help (with a dash of humor thrown in for taste), The Happier Hour is both a podcast and an event that aims to make philosophy useful for the rest of us. Each episode explores a modern-day dilemma, via the lens of the greatest philosophers of all time, with special guests in the hot seat who know about stuff. Think of The Happier Hour like the joy that comes from a strong drink at half the price, while surrounded by friends and friends you haven't met yet!

Why The Happier Hour? (I mean, doesn't the world have enough podcasts?)
You've got a point! But hear me out! The Happier Hour is unique because it:
  1. Bridges the gap between academic philosophy and the rest of us. Each event includes one academic philosopher and two philosophic-ish experts in their fields.
  2. Amplifies more diverse voices to philosophy. Let's face it. Philosophy has been and still is dominated by white men. The guests of the show represent more diverse voices. Also, I'm a woman and there are shockingly few philosophy podcasts hosted by women.
  3. Highlights how philosophy can be helpful in our everyday lives. Look, there's no point in slugging through Being And Nothingness if it's not going to be applicable in any way, am I right? That's why the shows are structured by topic (i.e. money, creativity) and not by philosophic concept. Also, each show ends with a reflective prompt to ponder after the episode ends.
  4. Brings the fun! Who said philosophy has to be boring? If I do my job right, you'll be both entertained and smarter by the end of each show.

Will you help bring The Happier Hour Season Two to life?
The Happier Hour launched as a labor of love. The ticket prices of the live event are kept low and help cover the direct costs of the night. The costs of the podcast (including the audio recording at the event, editing, equipment,  graphics, and website hosting) have been paid for by me, and Season One (which includes 30 episodes) has been 100% ad free.

While I believe in this show, I know I can't sustain it without help. There are so many ways I'd love to make this show even better for you!

A few items on the wish list:
  • Improved and more in depth show notes and resources
  • Better audio recording equipment
  • Events outside NYC
  • The Happier Hour merchandise
  • Less time stressing about money and more time creating great content!

If you've made it this far down the page, thank you for taking the time to learn about the show! Even if you can't support the show financially, I'd be ever so grateful if you shared this page with your friends and colleagues!

Cheers to you!
