The Happylands is creating research into men's mental health

Hi, I'm Carrie. The little dog with me is Dougie, and my VW campervan is Peggy. Together we are travelling Europe researching men's mental health.

From the "Sadlands" of the UK to the "Happylands" of Denmark I will be asking the question, "what does it mean to be a man in the 21st century?" so we can create a world where tolerance, compassion and empathy are valued and seen as a strength.

But I need your help.

Suicide is the single biggest cause of death for men under the age of 45. That means if you are a man between 20 and 49, you are more likely to die from suicide than cancer, road accidents or heart disease.

Something is going terribly wrong in men's mental health.

Yet just 5.8% of the total UK health research spend is on mental health. That is approximately £8 per person who is affected by a mental illness. It is not enough.

In the current economic climate organisations such as, mental health charities and universities, are finding it increasingly difficult to fund research like mine.

Besides, I want this research to be different. I don't want it rotting away on a shelf in some library somewhere. I don't want it to be for academics, used only by academics. I've seen it happen. I don't want that.

I want the research to be user-led. This means the research will be about real men with real stories in the real world. This means the research will be about you, for you

From as little as $1 or 77p per month you can become part of the Happylands community; a community that cares about the future and is willing to fight for it.

What will the money be spent on?

  1. Translators. Visiting schools, talking with everyday people in multiple countries, means asking sensitive questions that have complex answers. It's best to do this in their first language. This by far, is the biggest expense of the Happylands research.
  2. Outreach. I need to find schools and people who want to be part of the research. This takes not only time, but money to fund marketing initiatives, so we can reach more people with our message.
  3. Web Development. A vibrant, informative website is essential to showing prospective research participants that this is the real deal. It is also integral to keeping you all up-to-date about the research as it develops. But it costs money from hosting to outsourcing programming skills.
  4. Me. Recruiting, securing the right permissions, then interviewing participants takes up to 6 weeks. Transcribing the audio recordings, then coding the responses using grounded theory, takes around a week. A well-researched article for the Happylands blog, takes on average 2-3 days. Gathering all this data, plus understanding each country's cultural context, and then turning this into tangible theories that people actually want to read, is a job. A job that I hope you believe is worthwhile, as much as I do.

That's the basics. With those pieces covered, the Happylands can support itself and become a research project that has the potential to change the way we see and understand men's mental health.

FAQ

Why should I support you?
Within my career I have worked with over 1000 schools across the UK and Europe. I have seen firsthand how poor wellbeing and a lack of effective support effects young men's behaviour. My background in education coupled with my experience in research design for my MA in Education means I can provide robust, sensitive and thoughtful research that has the potential to make an impact on social policy.

What is Patreon?
The way Patreon works is a Happylands supporter can pay whatever they want per month and the payment is recurring each month after that. So anything, from $1/month up, is hugely helpful to the cause.

Do I have to pay in US Dollars?
Nope! Everything is shown in US dollars on the website, but you may use any currency and it will be automatically converted.

Do I have to stick to the pledge tiers?
No, you can pledge whatever you can afford. Every little helps!

What if I change my mind?
Don't worry, you can cancel or adjust your pledge amount for any reason at any time.

What do I get in return?
Other than my everlasting gratitude and respect, I have created different pledge tiers where you will receive various rewards for supporting this work.

Thank you so much for supporting this research. I can't wait to build and get to know the Happylands community!
