Why The Iron Pact is on Patreon?

I'm Paul Baldowski. I'd like to think I'm a game designer in the same way Bruce Wayne is a crime fighter. I'm a business analyst by day, but when I'm not in a cubicle somewhere, I do games, chart maps, sketch drawings and mangle mechanics.

As a full-time business analyst, I have to manage my free time with care - as I also help my wife with her successful business creating the  All Rolled Up game roll and dice bag and juggling one or two other creative activities.

In January 2016, I discovered the Swedish tabletop roleplaying game Symbaroum - and after devouring the core book in a week I fell in love with the setting, the artwork, and the enthusiasm.

In February 2016, I started The Iron Pact, a blog channelling my excitement about the game into a creative mass of posts on setting, creatures, adventures, elixirs, maps and news. I posted almost every day for more than two months - but that creative focus needs time.

Why should you support me?

I need your help to support my continued output for the Symbaroum tabletop RPG because the time I spend on posting about and for the game is time not spent on other projects.

Everything I write on The Iron Pact blog will be published free of charge, available for everyone to read. Your pledge supports me in getting some essential focus on the subject, where I would otherwise spend time on other creative penny-worthy endeavours.

By supporting me through Patreon, I can allot time specifically to researching and writing material for the expanding world of Symbaroum and the forbidding forest of Davokar. Through your patronage, each time I publish a content article on The Iron Pact, I receive money based on what you choose to pledge.

(So, if I just update you on news or an event I attend that doesn't count as 'content'. Content means an article to extend, expand or consider how, or why, you play the game.)

How does it work?

Since launching The Iron Pact in mid-February 2016, I have published more than 125,000 words of original content - from mini-adventures to new monstrous adversaries, with articles on crime, Ambrian building materials, and hex maps along the way.

I plan to continue to expand on that. Your pledge gives me the opportunity to post more stuff for Symbaroum.

You might think, "Well I'm all for that... but you post a lot of material."

Well, the way Patreon works, you won't have to worry about going bankrupt - whatever frequency I post, you can choose to set monthly limits on your pledges and you can choose to change your pledge or even stop supporting at any time.

What will my support mean?

More material for Symbaroum, freely available to everyone. I have no professional connection with the creation of the game and everything I write is not canon, but I think the existing content of The Iron Pact blog stands up to scrutiny. I enjoy writing about the setting and I have had a lot of fun talking about expanding and playing within the game world.

I have experience in writing for tabletop gaming, starting with contributions to the Mongoose edition of PARANOIA in 2004, including full-length not-at-all-about-dungeoneering supplement The Underplex. I have written adventures, supplements and made contributions of various length, as a freelance, for Maelstrom, Outlive Outdead, and Night's Black Agents: The Dracula Dossier. Currently, I produce my own game line, The Cthulhu Hack, which provides a simple, fast-to-start way to run investigations in Lovecraft's Mythos-threatened universe.

How often will I post?

I plan to publish about three times a month, depending on real world commitments. I have posted as much as 7 or 8 times a week in the past, but I think I might have just got over-excited! You can always cap your patron pledge, but more than two or three times a month should be a rarity and I will give you advance warning should I expect to post more often.

Thank you for your support.

For this you have my thanks for the support and access to my Patron Only content stream.
Colonist
$3 or more per Blog Post 6 patrons
For this you have my thanks, access to my Patron Only content stream and I will add a text link to your site, blog or Twitter account in the footer of The Iron Pact. If you don't have a link, I can post your name - or your character name.

I reserve the right to ask for an alternative if you choose something objectionable or unsuitable for family viewing, and I won't connect to you if you're a link farm!
Adventurer
$5 or more per Blog Post 5 patrons
For this you have thanks, the Patron Only content stream, a text link, and, uniquely for you, the opportunity to suggest a preferred post topic on something that interests you. I will write something when I next get the opportunity or when the creative bug strikes (but I can't necessarily guarantee a date when it will appear!).
Seeker
$10 or more per Blog Post 3 patrons
For this you have thanks, the Patron Only content stream, a text link, the option to suggest a preferred post topic and once a month I will create an extra one-page PDF for Seekers only - like a map, an encounter table, or a couple of pre-generated characters - which won't be available to the public until 30-days after you have access.
Goals
$75 of $100 per Blog Post
Putting together the material for the site, I use some outdated word processing and graphics software. If I can hit this goal, I can cover the subscription costs for an updated software package for art and cloud-based creativity.
