The Kid Should See This is creating a growing library of smart and engaging videos for all ages.

The Kid Should See This is a website for curious minds of all ages. We feature 4,000+ smart videos for kids and adults alike, and I add 10-15 more every week.

Each video is selected to contribute to a kid-friendly corner on the internet that doesn’t underestimate what children can learn or what subjects might interest them. It's a highly-curated collection that advocates critical thinking, creativity, community, innovation, and problem-solving, essentials for our changing world.

And TKSST is fun and free. At a time when teachers buy their classroom supplies, and public schools are often undersupported, free academic resources are essential. TKSST connects educators with high-quality videos they can use in class. We also feature topics that are often misunderstood—evolution, climate change science, and clean energy solutions—and we seek to amplify women and people of color who work in STEM and other creative fields.

HOW TKSST GOT STARTED 🐋

My name is Rion Nakaya, and I started TKSST in 2011 because I didn't like the media that was being marketed to my kids—full of simplistic narration, smart-alecky dialogue, and little-to-no educational content. And so, inspired by the PBS shows I watched when I was little, I turned to the internet to find the kind of wonders and ‘wow!’ moments that I wanted my kids to see... and that I wanted to watch, too:

Seven years later, The Kid Should See This has become a trusted resource for educators, parents, and curious people of all ages. These videos have jumpstarted projects and experiments. They've played a part in Genius Hours, inquiry-based learning, flipped classroom activities, and integrated studies. They've informed. They've started conversations. And they've been fun to watch together at home.

Our community values progressive education, lifelong learning, and genuinely entertaining stuff. And TKSST is fun for people without kids, too. Our newsletter has over 23K subscribers, and in the last year, we've enjoyed 1.74 million visitors and six million page views.

GOAL 1: 🌳 GROWING THE SITE

As TKSST's traffic increases, its expenses increase. One ad and affiliate sales currently help pay for this, but it's inconsistent and not enough to grow the site. And I definitely don't want to fill the site with ads. Here's where we need support:

Outreach: I want teachers and librarians to know about the excellent videos and content creators we feature. With your help, I'll have a marketing budget to connect TKSST with a broader audience of educators. I'll also have the means to pay for our server and free newsletter as traffic and subscribers increase.

Site Content: It takes dozens of hours to find videos, write about them, fact-check them, and share them every week. I’ve done this for free in between freelance projects and full-time jobs for years. It’s important to me to finally make this a paid full-time endeavor. With dedicated time, I'll be able to share more videos, explore new subjects, and launch new site features.

GOAL 2: 🏫 EXPANDING THE TEAM

I want to properly pay education and development pros to help make TKSST a smarter and more useful resource for educators. Here's who can make meaningful improvements:

A teacher. With a stipend to pay an education pro, I’ll be able to offer better search parameters and support content for using TKSST videos in the classroom, including tagging all 4,000+ videos with suggested grade levels and tying them to curriculum standards.

A developer. With support, I’ll also be able to partner with a developer to improve TKSST’s old and rickety code, optimizing everything and building upon that with new functionality.

GOAL 3: 🎙 FROM CURATION TO CREATION

There are more smart media options for kids in 2018, but there are still gaps. Many topics and conversations aren’t covered with a kid-lens, and we have a long way to go in amplifying STEAM topic experts who are underrepresented voices. If you're still reading, I'm guessing you might be feeling this way, too.

TKSST can contribute the changes we want to see, and I'll need a smart team that can bring it all together. Is it a podcast? A video series? A TKSST app? And are we helping to fund like-minded creators?! Help me reach this goal, and you’ll be instrumental in helping us create smart new content for curious minds of all ages.

ABOUT RION 👩🏻💻

Hi, I'm Rion Nakaya. 👋 I love storytelling, sustainable tech, well-designed spaces, and wandering the halls of small museums and science centers. At DIY .org and JAM, two online learning communities for kids, I produced educational video courses for ages 7-13. Before that, I mixed brand strategy & UX into interactive projects for museums, Fortune 100 clients, and art startup 20x200. Now I run TKSST and recently contributed kid-friendly digital content to the team at Minnesota Public Radio's Brains On! podcast.
