Kindred

is creating a community for women's voices to be heard

In 2015 I had a vision for a magazine that felt inclusive, rather than exclusive. I wanted a magazine that would share ALL parts of life instead of just the happy moments. I wanted a magazine that would remind us that we're all connected through our shared experiences and that no matter what you go through in life, IT'S OKAY. I wanted to create a community that allowed women to be able to say "me, too".

Kindred was created from this idea. I believe that each time you share a piece of yourself and your journey, you allow someone else to share theirs. And there is nothing more powerful than that.

As the editor of the magazine, I have the amazing honor to tell stories from women in all walks of life. And it's my goal to share the honest stories of life. In the past we've had stories on miscarriage and infertility, mental health and addiction, body image and self-care, adoption and divorce, and so much more. We are the safe space that our readers are searching for. The outlet they've been craving for honest media, and the chance to connect with women who have been where they are.

So how are we different from any other magazine?

Because we share YOUR stories. We feature stories from your sister, your neighbor, your best friend. We deliberately seek out stories from women of all ages, races, and life steps. We strive to reflect all women.

Because we don't just share the Instagram perfect life. Though written to inspire the reader to know they're not alone, we are okay with pulling back the veil and showcasing the tough side of life. Experiences (good and bad) are what make us who we are.

Because we're changing the face of media. At the heart of it all, we're focused on honesty. You'll find that not only in our pages, but also from our team. We aren't secretive about this journey to build a community. We let you know what we're going through, too.

Because we're building a true community. More than anything, Kindred exists for connection. It was at the heart of the magazine from the very beginning and will continue to be to the end. We don't want you to just purchase the magazine four times a year, we want you to tell us about your daily lives, come to us when you need help, and support the other women that are strong enough to be vulnerable. Essayist and poet Kathleen Norris once wrote: “Human storytelling was once all breath, the sacred act of telling family stories and tribal histories around a fire.” Now, our storytelling is captured in words on the page and screen, but the sentiment is the same: We’re saving you a seat at the bonfire.

Kindred is a place of support, no judgement, and the desire for honesty in a world filled with competition. We are here for you, and you are safe with us. And today we ask you to help us grow and reach more women that need us. We're only as strong as our community and we need your help.

Thank you,
Sarah Hartley

"This is a revolution to show women, you are perfect as you are and there are other women just like you who have been standing right where you feel you are right now. It's just that now, because of H&L, you know you are not standing there alone." - Chelsea Oliver

Goals
19% complete
Okay, okay, we know that $2000 is a lot. But we may as well shoot for the moon, right? $2000 is a lot of money, we know that. If everyone in our community donated even $1, we'd easily make this amount.

And if we get there, there is so much we'd be able to do, including:

GROW. We want to share Kindred with women around the world who need to know that they aren't alone. That is one of our biggest goals and if we reach our goal, it will enable us to promote the magazine and this community in new and exciting ways.

PAY OUR CONTRIBUTORS. The amazing stories and photos that you’ve come to know and love? Those are submitted to us for free. We'd love to pay the people who are so willing to be vulnerable with us and share their stories with the world.

PAY OUR TEAM. We've all worked tirelessly on this magazine for over four years. Running a magazine while also having other full-time responsibilities is no joke. This will help us pay the people who bring you the stories that you love the most.

KEEP THE LIGHTS ON. You know how some people live paycheck to paycheck? We live issue to issue, always terrified that we'll never be able to afford the upcoming issue and our behind the scenes expenses. Each month we have a large stack of bills that come due and this would help us take care of them.

TAKE A DEEP BREATH. When you're constantly worried about paying for the bills, you often have a hard time taking a step back and seeing that what you're doing IS making a difference. This little cushion will allow us to do just that. To interact more and really celebrate what our community has accomplished.
