Welcome to my artistic freedom journey!

First of all, thank you for joining me in this movement. This has been a long time coming, and all the long nights of planning and putting this together were worth it. The Mad Writer Project is a multimedia project that has a specific goal: to build a theater production and publishing company, The Mad Writer Project, LLC.

As a business, it's a creative arts company that manages my writing, publishing, and media business. But formalities aside, my dream goal is to create a theater production company to produce and distribute my plays.

When I decided to move my entire writing and media business to Patreon, I was scared out of my damn mind. Every day, I was asking myself what in the hell was I doing. People spent days trying to get me to calm down and reminding me that this is what I always wanted to do. They were right. So it was now or never. There would be no turning back. As Steve Harvey probably would've told me to do, I'm taking the leap.

Using Patreon allows me to do exactly what I've always wanted; to have true independence over my work and it's direction. I've always been an advocate of artistic independence. As an artist, it's important to feel as creatively free as possible. With Patreon, I can choose what to create, how I want to distribute my work, and who I want to distribute my work to. I have creative and artistic freedom. How great is that?

For at least ten years, my passion has been to start my own production company. While I'll still license my plays to interested producers and entering my plays in contests, I want to be my own producer.

As far as with building a publishing company, before I tried working with a publisher, I had been publishing my own material since 2007. I took a break from books for a while and focused on writing plays and blogging. Now I think it's time for me to return to the book publishing world. While I won't be writing and publishing a book every month, I have several book projects that I've never finished or in progess, but I will be doing through this project and company; with the option of publishing them myself or licensing them to publishers.

A short bio of me.

I'm JB Burrage and I'm a writer currently living in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Originally from Meridian, Mississippi, I joined the US Army in 1999, where I served until 2010. I discovered writing as a child, which I used as a therapeutic escape since I was a little quiet and introverted. Since then, I've written several pieces of work, including plays and books. I've also contributed to several online sites and other projects. My complete bio can be found at jbburrage.com.

The Mad Writer Project, a multimedia experience.

The Mad Writer Project is using the Patreon platform to create and develop my work. The project is being used to create theater productions and publish my other written work and videos. Patreon has great creators and patrons with a trusted platform that has been tried and tested, and I wanted to build on something that was trusted.

I'm pretty sure most people know that even putting on a small production can be a costly endeavor, but this isn't just about making money. It's about putting in the hard work to create a quality show, and having the resources to do so. It also requires careful step-by-step planning, which is why I'm producing one to two full plays a year for the time being.

But quantity isn't important to me; for me, it's about the quality. That's my focus...quality work. If that means doing one project at a time, then that's how it's going to be. If it's not good quality, then I would be wasting your time. Meanwhile, I have to finance my company, the production, and pay myself so I can...well you know, live. My stage productions will range from the more experimental and intimate black box performances to full-scale productions with a mid-size to a large audience; from one-person shows to full-cast shows.

In the publishing arena, I want it to be known that I'm publishing my work. I'm not looking for authors. But I wanted to go back to publishing for the very reason why I moved my business to Patreon; to have better creative control and freedom of my work and remain independent. After experiences with other publishers, I realized that I needed to retake control of my own publishing business. With this platform, I'll be creating short stories, blogs, and publishing some of my plays. Occasionally I'll be publishing a novella or promoting a through this platform.

What will you get in return for helping me?

Quite a bit. You would have to go to check out the perks of the memberships to see exactly what you would get. This is a multimedia platform, so you'll get exclusive access to blog posts, story samples and completed stories, as well as vlogs.

The content for The Mad Writer Project will mostly be broken down into these categories:
  • The Diary of a Mad Writer: My signature blog that used to be at jbburrage.com. Included in the blog will be the Sunday Night Thought series.
  • Through the Fire: A special series of The Diary of a Mad Writer that will focus on mental health issues. These will especially be from a personal aspect, as I suffer from bipolar disorder; something I publicly disclosed in 2017. The subjects in this series shouldn't be taken as professional or medical advice, as I'm not a medical professional or expert. These articles will be posted once or twice a month.
  • The Mad Writer Theater: All theater projects that I will create or post, such as ten-minute plays, samples of one-act plays, first act releases of full-length plays, and draft scenes of my play I want to produce.
  • The Mad Writer Stories: This series is for my short stories, chapter releases of books, novella releases, and other stories and samples.
I'll also post surprise materials just because...I like to be random sometimes. It keeps you off your toes. What fun would it be if you expected work from me at the same time every month? Or the same kind of material?

Because I want to know how the community feels about my work, I'll be having polls and reading and responding to your comments and suggestions, in which you can also comment among each other, and having chats on Discord.

Let's sign you up!

This project has three membership plans for you to join; Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Don't ask me why I gave them these names; they just came out of my head suddenly and I went with the flow. With each membership, there are perks, with current and future loyalty benefits for patrons who maintain their memberships.

This is a per creation (per post) membership platform, meaning you'll be charged as I post. I set this up so when I have to take some downtime to focus on projects or to take a break, you won't be charged continuously if my posting becomes less frequent. It also makes it easier for me to distribute certain work to you. With that in mind, so you won't be charged for excessive posts in one month, I will make certain posts for the public. Those posts are free, so you won't be charged. You can also set a monthly cap (read this article for details), that way you won't spend more than you can afford.

While each membership plan has a set price, you're not limited to that. You can also place a custom pledge of any amount if you're not interested in the perks. You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your plan at any time.

To conclude before this gets longer than it already is...

These are two great actors that I worked with in my first production, a black box reading in August 2015. While it was a small project and some of my bigger plans had to be scaled back, I remember being so excited about putting this together. I want more projects just like this, but bigger and better.

This lady was at my very first book signing in 2010, when I was in Las Cruces, NM. Her husband, a fellow Mississippian who was excited to see a Mississippi author in New Mexico, and asked her to take this picture. All of these images remind me of a time when I was enjoying what I was doing because it was of my creation; my thing; and I was receiving so much support for it. I was finally in my element. I want to get back to that because I miss it. With your contributions, I can do that...and get back to the basics.

If you have any other questions to ask concerning my work and anything else, you can contact me at any time at jbburrage.com

I've never done any kind of live streaming before aside from some crazy Facebook Live videos. But I've realized that it's an important way to talk with you.

When I reach this goal, I'll start live streaming at least twice a month until I get more comfortable. They will be about various topics, some will be sessions on things like mental health while some will be just because I feel like talking to you. Some will be public, while most will be for patrons-only.

This isn't my only goal. Click the right-pointing button at the top to go to my other goals.
