Here's The Big Deal on who we are and why we're on Patreon.

Who We Are: I am Shaine Freeman, a 22 year music and film business veteran who lives in Atlanta (GA) with my wife/business partner, Candy, and our two small children. I started The Miews (which stands for Music interviews, news, and reviews) in May 2014 as a podcast and blog to help musicians not only learn to make a living doing music, but also give them exposure to music fans and real music executives.

My music career began in the mid-90s as a record producer/musician who went on to work with such acts as Usher and BoyzIIMen, scoring a Grammy-nomination in the process. In 2009, Candy and I began managing actors & musicians, some of our clients included IronE Singleton (T-Dog from Seasons 1-3 of The Walking Dead) and Jeff Rose (MTV's Teen Wolf series). That same year, we launched IAEMagazine.com to educate and inspire up-and-coming entertainers. Since launching the company we have grown it into an award-winning and globally recognized media source.

Our Dilemma: Growing a successful media company has brought with it this idea that we make millions and have 100 employees. While it's flattering that others see our hard work and assume we're at the level of a Time Inc., the truth is there are only two full-time employees at I Am Entertainment Media -- me and Candy -- making a modest living.

Since launching The Miews in 2014 I've recorded and published over 140 podcasts featuring 300+ artists, written and posted 300+ album reviews and interviews, designed and published over 35 magazine issues, as well as 50+ highly detailed blog posts. All of this content is free to access, which means we don't make any money from it. The Miews has grown tremendously in these past two years and demands a great deal of my time and money (90% of it is funded from my own pocket).

So, what started as a side project to help independent musicians has now outpaced my ability to fund it and dedicate the time it is demanding unless we are able to get some help from our awesome community of readers and listeners.

Where The Money Will Go:
Our initial goal is $5,000/month. That money plus various other income streams will be enough to keep The Miews going, indefinitely. Here are our costs:
  1. PAYING ROYALTIES. We're always being asked by indie labels and artists if The Miews podcast pays royalties for the songs we spin. My reply was, "Yes, we do." But, now -- due to the costs -- I am now replying, "No, but we're working on it."  So, some of the money will go toward paying royalties to songwriters & artists/bands.
  2. HOSTING SERVICES. We need a robust enough hosting plan to support the growing traffic to themiews.com. The last thing we need is the site crashing during peak traffic times. In addition to website hosting, we will need to expand our podcast hosting plan to accommodate additional audio storage and servicing to iTunes and podcast players.
  3. MAILCHIMP. This is the service we use to send out emails to our subscribers. This fee goes up as our email list grows.
  4. ONGOING WEB DEVELOPMENT. Like all technology dependent companies, our website/blog is at the core of our business. As we grow technical glitches arise that require site maintenance beyond our expertise, so we'll need to hire an IT professional to fix it.
  5. MARKETING. We have to market/advertise every podcast episode, album review, interview, and article we publish to ensure that those we feature are able to reach a maximum number of listeners and readers.
  6. ME. I need to continue to eat, bathe, wear things, and use electricity to keep The Miews going. Thanks to other successful business ventures my needs are minimal.
  7. KEEPING IT AD FREE: The only way to keep The Miews going without mucking it up with a bunch of paid commercials and advertisements we need to meet the goals listed in the left column of this page.
  8. SUSTAINABILITY: We need to make The Miews self-sustaining for this to work for a long time. The brand is trying to grow so, the whole "fund it out of our own pocket to keep it free" plan that worked for years 1 & 2, isn't going to work anymore.
Those are the basics. With those pieces covered, The Miews can support itself.

STRETCH GOAL:
We're grateful for just any amount we're able to raise from generous patrons like you. But, if we're able to reach our "Stretch Goal" of $10,000/month we will be able to take The Miews to amazing new heights and do things like:
  • Make our annual Miews Music Awards (2MAs) into a live concert venue. We are hosting our 1st annual 2MAs online in winter 2016. Turning it into a live awards show in its second year would allow bands the chance to perform for fans and accept their awards live.
  • Launch a bi-weekly video cast.
  • Increase the podcast frequency from weekly to 2x per week.
  • Hire an in-house assistant to help with social media and other administrative duties.
  • Redesign the website. The current site is very minimal, but our stretch goal would fund the development of a much more interactive platform that could include a place for artists to create a profile and submit for live gigs and music licensing opportunities.
Anyway, thanks for any support you can offer if you decide to, and thanks for being a valued listener and reader of The Miews!

Cheers,
~ Shaine

Goals
$0 of $5,000 per month
Every dollar we raise on Patreon is immensely helpful, but this is the goal that would allow us to keep paying royalties to the bands/artists we play on The Miews, because it can get expensive. In addition, we would be able to expand the magazine and blog to feature more bands and increase our marketing efforts to make sure bands we feature will reach a much larger fanbase.
