About The Okra Pod Cast

The Okra Pod Cast is dedicated to okra, not just the pod, but the whole plant and the people it connects. It’s amazing where okra will take you, so join us as we explore okra in all its diversity, both in the garden and the kitchen, and maybe even on Mars!

This podcast is all about community and connection, but it’s also about okra! We are exploring the world through the lens of okra and, as you’ll see, there is nothing that okra cannot teach us! Amongst other things, okra is vegetable, plant, symbol, history, culture and community. Okra has a long and expansive history, and a bright and exciting future. Through okra we are meeting people all over the world and sharing their stories and passions.

Along the way we are also collecting recipes, which will be archived here and freely accessible to everyone. By supporting this podcast you are allowing us to continue creating okra-related oral, written and visual documentation and works of art.

This podcast is produced by two passionate and creative podheads, Chris Smith and Rebekka White. Learn more about the co-hosts:

Chris Smith is a seed saver and food advocate who loves to write. He is executive director of the Utopian Seed Project, a crop-trialing non-profit working to celebrate diversity in food and farming. His book, The Whole Okra, won a James Beard Foundation Award in 2020. More info at blueandyellowmakes.com and utopianseed.org or on Instagram.

Rebekka White explores the nexus between the culinary world, migration of people, and the digital world. Her creative pursuits include the development of The WildOkra Projects, which feature a number of collaborative, okra-related projects. As an artist, Rebekka uses okra as a canvas and tool for exploring the journeys and experiences of her ancestors. She exhibits her work and is currently working on creating an online exhibition. You can contact her at WildOkra or via social media.
