About Science of the Lamps

Welcome to the Science of the Lamps Patreon page!

Thank you so much for showing interest in us! We are Science of the Lamps, a 'vaudeville grunge pop outfit' fronted by me, Kaya (singer, songwriter and chief ‘lamp scientist’) and some of my favourite musicians and people, depending on the gig. Since its inception in 2011, the band is an organic collective of creatives based in both Liverpool and London, and we have played more in Liverpool than anywhere else. We also took home several awards and nominations for music for two feature films 'My Lonely Me' and 'This is It'. Here's what local music blog Getintothis said about one performance:

"Science Of The Lamps hit the stage with force with sublime harmony quartet The Usherettes proving themselves once more to be an exceptionally well versed outfit comprised of some of the heaviest local talent. Kaya fronts the band with such a bounty of charm, passion and personality and displayed time and time again why she is so widely regarded as such a one of a kind songstress."

We have also been playing gigs and festivals all over the place, including John Grant’s North Atlantic Flux (Hull), , Also Festival (Warwickshire), Spectra Festival (Aberdeen) Liverpool Pride, Cowley Road Carnival (Oxford), Liverpool Sound City, Liverpool International Music Festival, , Light Night, Great Escape, Tramlines, Ramsbottom, UnConvention, my own festival Threshold Festival (Liverpool) and numerous smaller festivals and gigs around the UK, Norway, Germany, US and France.

"music that proudly smacks their audience in the face, their theatrical flair and overwhelming passion for the music" MusicmafiaUK

We have played venues such as Leaf, Camp and Furnace, The Kazimier, Epstein theatre, Arts Club/Barfly/Masque, Sefton Park Palmhouse, Williamson’s Tunnels, The Bluecoat, Constellations, District, Studio 2 Parr Street, View Two Gallery (all in Liverpool), other North West venues such as Castle Hotel (Manchester), Night & Day (Manchester) Ruby Lounge (Manchester), The Deaf Institute (Manchester), Atkinsons (Southport), Live Rooms (Chester), Alexander’s (Chester), The Hot House (Morecambe), Square Chapel (Halifax), The Citadel (Saint Helens) and further afield Nice’n’Sleazy (Glasgow), The Tunnels (Aberdeen), Troubadour (London), Queens Head (London), The Good Ship (London), The Star (Guildford), Dublin Castle (London), Kulturhuset (Oslo), Rockwood Music Hall (NYC), VocalizeU (LA), La Forge (Harfleur), Magic Mirrors (Le Havre), Landschaftspark (Moers) and many more!

The press and bloggers have said nice things, like these:
“A magic veil of true class.” – Liverpool Live
“An alluring hybrid of driving rock and burlesque blues.” – Bido Lito
“It’s oId Pop in its nicest possible form, the song writing ticking all those imaginary boxes” #SRCZ
“hauntingly melodic yet a little dirty at the same time.' ManGoneBlog

A rising trend amongst independent artists, Patreon is an opportunity for Science of the Lamps to be able to keep on doing what we have been doing since splitting with our label before the last release.  This gives artists an opportunity to interact directly with fans of music, something that excites us!. The audience are effectively part of a boutique label and get to take part in decisions, get access to special content; like 'The Usherettes', (four part harmony group within the collective), sending sing-a-grams to you or a loved one, live streamed concerts, Q&As, living room concerts and secret shows. We picked up the idea in July last year whilst supporting fantastic Patreon artist Gaby Young last summer, and are excited to explore its possibilities!

The launch of our own campaign coincides with the single release of 'Through My Father's Eyes' on the 27th of February, four years to the date of when I unfortunately lost my lovely father father to a sudden heart attack at 63.

The artwork is by my friend since college and fellow Norwegian, Tone Blomli Johnsen, (who once ) came over to stay for two months but ended up staying for two years. Dubbed as her ‘grief portrait’, because 'it captures the perfect amount of sadness yet full of beauty and courage'.

The album ‘Nightmarine’ recording in process, out later this year, which will be recorded, produced and mixed at Big Smoke Studios and mastered at Metropolis Studios, hopefully with the help of you guys!

You might recognise some of the tracks if you have been coming to gigs, and we will send out regular updates and backstage/studio footage of the recording process. We are also planning on showing you as Patreon some songs in early demo stage to help decide the final songs on the album!

The tracks on the upcoming album includes these (although more will be added)
Through My Father’s Eyes (Part of all Patreon content packs)
Nightmarine (live version in most Patreon content packs)
STRAWS (music video and track download in all content packs)

These are already in our live set and will be part of the secret content in the upcoming months or up for release:
Invisible, Invincible Women
Flying Too Low
Little When You Were Little

These are coming up, but not yet recorded or part of our live set:
Good News Gone Bad
This Isn’t How The Story Ends
These Birds Don’t Sing

In addition, all Patreons get access to previously released material that includes:

Please do let us know if you have any other ideas or requests, we would be happy to chat about it and try to make it happen!
