Okay, so here's the deal with who we are and why we're starting a Patreon account:
We’re the underdog everyone thought wouldn’t make it out of the gates alive. The Tempest came out of the gate fighting for diverse millennial women - and it comes from a deeply personal place.
We’re a media company that’s being run by a mission-driven team and a global force of contributors. We’ve been very fortunate to be able to grow to the extent that we are now, where people are paying attention, reading and writing – but we are not satisfied to settle where we’re at.
Why? Because to settle means that we’re not giving space for more underrepresented voices to be heard. Because to settle means that we're not disrupting bigger media platforms like they need to be. Because to settle means that "diversity" in media will always be a myth - never a reality. We always want to continue to grow and expand, whether it be upgrading website capacity, creating videos, developing podcasts, hiring team members, etc. We're a very small group and we tend to overextend ourselves both physically and monetarily, doing everything from covering breaking issues to editing videos to building all our own designs in-house.
We Know a Few Things Now:
We’re here to make it possible for you to have the media you always wanted. But we need your support to do the work that we do – and provide space for voices to be heard, to be supported and to be empowered.
The way Patreon works is a reader can donate whatever they want per month and the donation is recurring each month after that. So anything, from $1/month up, is hugely helpful to the cause.
What We'll Use the Money For:
Since the very beginning, our priority has been to pay people fairly for their time, sweat, energy, and expertise - so much so that the founders have often (and currently) put their own funds to keep that aim true.
Our initial goal is $750/month. That money will be enough to keep The Tempest afloat and able to grow without any website crashes. We’ve split it into four essential costs:
- Fairly paying our staff writers. We want to continue being able to foster and establish staff writers who can regularly produce quality features, but fully recognize that human beings need so much more than “exposure.” While we already pay our writers, we want to be able to increase that pay sustainably.
- Fairly paying our contributors. Exposure doesn't pay rent, and, when it comes to diverse millennial women’s media, exposure can come with a particularly high price. While we already pay our writers, we want to be able to increase that pay sustainably.
- Hosting. We need a robust enough hosting plan to support the highest spikes in traffic we ever get so we don't crash during those moments and ruin my happiness.
- MailChimp. The service we use to send emails to our incredible audience (you!). This fee grows as the email list grows.
Those are the very basics. Will we get all we're asking for? That's up to you, but we definitely would be in a better place than where we are now just from your small tokens of support. I want to personally say thank you so much for long-time supporters and new fans of The Tempest. It is because of you that this space continues to thrive.
Every single dollar brings us closer to changing the world. We've come an enormously long way in such a short space of time, but there's so much more we can accomplish.
