In early 2017, I created an Excel (spreadsheet) tracking log for writers participating in Camp NaNoWriMo. The goal was simple: provide a simple way for the participants to track their progress towards their writing goal for the month, regardless of the number of writing sessions per day. A few months later, the Online Writing Log was born in order to help writers achieve their goals by allowing them to keep themselves accountable, celebrate the small victories and the ultimate goal of publishing their stories. This is the vision of both iterations of the writing log.

What Does It Look Like?

The below video contains the walk-through that explains how the Online Writing Log works. Recorded in early 2018, numerous improvements have been made since but it'll give you an idea of what to expect.

Where Will The Money Go?

I'd like to be able to keep the Online Writing Log (as well as the spreadsheet version) free for everyone that needs them. Any funds you pledge will go directly towards the continued development of the tracking sheet as well as the server costs associated with the Online Writing Log.

Current Status

The Writing Log Spreadsheet in its current state offers the following:
  • Enter any word count goal for the month you're writing in.
  • Write as many times per day as you want and record each session individually.
  • Dynamic daily writing goals that adjust based on how much (or little) you write every day. Skip a day and the goals for the rest of the month adjusts accordingly.
  • Easy to read statistics that tells you where you are for the day and month.
  • Various statistical graphs that interprets your progress visually.
  • Compatible with Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice and Google Docs.
The Online Writing Log offers the following:
  • All of the above (excluding the spreadsheet software compatibility).
  • Completely web-based.
  • Track multiple different activities, including writing, editing, outlining, brainstorming and more.
  • Setup multiple projects and track your progress towards your goals.
  • Countdown timer for writing sprints.
  • Regular timer to track time spent on your activity.
  • Share your progress directly to Twitter and Facebook.

Planned Improvements

Currently, my primary focus is on developing the Online Writing Log. Planned features include:
  • Achievements and badges (this goes towards the mission of the app, to celebrate your achievements
  • Challenges (monthly challenges, for example, including NaNoWriMo)
  • Social components to let users have a bit of friendly competition and encourage each other on.
  • Leaderboards
  • Premium features
For the Writing Log Spreadsheet, there are also planned improvements this year, including:
  • Multi-project tracking
  • Annual dashboard
  • Tracking of more data points

Your support can make all of the above happen and in the process, you'll support not only the continued development but also those writers and creatives that use these tools.

Thank you for your consideration!

Twenty bucks pays for the server costs associated with the Online Writing Log during its development and early alpha/beta testing. It gives me the freedom to take the time I need to perfect it while keeping the spreadsheet up to date.
