I am Ozy Brennan! You may have seen my blog posts at Thing of Things! You may have thought "gosh, this is such a wonderful blog post, I want to give them MONEY? Possibly Ozy is so great that I want to give them money EVERY MONTH?" If that is the case, you can now give me money.

What is going to happen to my money?

I am going to donate half of it to whatever charity I think best, and the other half will go to paying for someone to watch my son so that I have time to produce the blog posts you have come to appreciate.

If I give you money, will this lead to the production of more blog posts?

Yes! Half of the money you give me goes directly towards paying for someone to watch my son. The more time Viktor is being watched by someone who is not me, the more blog posts you get. However, not all time when Viktor is at day care will be spent writing blog posts. Much of it will be spent studying, doing independent effective altruism research, cleaning, cooking, handling miscellaneous life tasks, and moderating an elaborate alternate history Tumblr RP. Realistically, some of it will also be spent lying on a couch complaining that I feel miserable.

Are you serious about the elaborate alternate history Tumblr RP?

Yes.

Can I have a link?

No.

Is this an effective charity?

While I grudgingly admit that donating to my Patreon is, at present, the best way to get me to spend more time working on effective altruist causes and thus could technically be considered 'EA charity', I would strongly prefer that charitably minded people donate to GiveWell instead. GiveWell donations are at zero risk of being reallocated to elaborate alternate history Tumblr RPs.

Are you really bad at giving Patreon rewards? Like, really really bad?

Yes, which is why this time all the rewards are things I am pretty sure I'm capable of doing. However, if you are donating to me for the reward, be aware that there is a pretty large chance I will not actually fulfill it.

What is the Effective Altruism Research Tip Line?

I've discovered the best source of interesting and important topics to research about effective altruism is one of my friends saying "I'm really curious about X" or "do you have any thoughts on Y?" I think it is pretty unlikely that my friends are the only source of these ideas. Please note that if you send me an idea, I will definitely think about it, but quite often I will think about it and go "nah, I don't want to write about that."

You are really really bad at marketing yourself.

It's called "transparency" and personally I think many people find it charming.

Currently, Viktor is watched by someone else two days a week. At this point, my writing would completely cover the cost of the nanny and donations, which means I'd continue to hire her indefinitely.
