Band recording
When I hit $200, I can afford to pay 3 other musos for their time (if they're nice and giving me mates rates) to do a rough recording of one of my songs! Woohoo!
Music video or something...?
I'd love to hit $1000 in order to get super creative and work with a bunch of other artists to do something super cool. Stay tuned!

My name is Tilley. I'm from Tasmania, I now live in Melbourne. I sing, I write music, I make art, I play ukulele and guitar and other random instruments. I make lots of different music, from folkyindie kinda stuff to funkysoul kinda stuff to weird artyfarty kind of stuff.
It seems like people dig the stuff I make. Back in 2012 I ran a successful crowdfunding campaign on Pozible.com to raise the funds necessary to produce my first album, Songs From A Cold Island.
Patreon is still crowdfunding, but different.
Instead of raising a big one-off amount of $ for a big project, Patreon is about ongoing support on a smaller level, allowing artists & creators to produce content more often. I’m asking you to give a little, so that I can make a lot (regular, consistent output).
Here’s a handy short video to explain further:
ON MUSIC AND MONEY:
In this day & age, no one HAS to pay for music. You can stream music for free on places like YouTube and Spotify. Which is great! But you’ve all heard how much these kinds of services pay artists, which is usually something to the tune of two-thirds of fuck all. Luckily, there are people out there - hopefully people like YOU - who want to support artists in what we do! That makes you AWESOME.
I love making music & art. And I love it when people listen to my music and enjoy and connect with my art, and I really don’t care whether they’ve paid for it or not - I just want to put my art out there and have it brighten someone’s day. That's why I release my music on Bandcamp for free/PayWhatYouWant.
However, I also really like eating, and paying my rent on time.
I’m not expecting to be able to live off my music right now; I don’t believe that just because I’m a musician & writer that I’m special, the world owes me a living, and I should be making six figures & living it up.
That’s why I also teach voice (and study vocal physiology), model for life drawing, work in cafes, etc. I’m always thankful to have employment. And this is another part of my self-employment.
The more that is pledged per Thing, the more I can put into making some really nice stuff. If I have enough pledged to be able to pay other musicians to play on my recordings, that will make them more awesome (and will be prioritised over paying myself)… and if I eventually have enough pledged to pay some other artists to collaborate (producers, photographers, designers, filmmakers…) I can make more awesome things, like music videos, and who knows what else!
MY PLANNED PATH FROM THIS POINT
In 2014 I pretty much took a break from playing gigs and pursuing my music career, in order to focus on establishing my vocal coaching business (my other passion) and studying vocal physiology & technique to support that (I'm currently training to become an Estill Voice Training Certified Master Teacher, which is as long a process as it is a name...)
I did do some other fun performing though, touring the USA with the Southern Gospel Choir in November and touring with Damon Albarn (Gorillaz, Blur) in December.
I’m in a new city now! In February 2015 I moved from my cold island of Tasmania to the big city of Melbourne. I’m excited to be here and I love the inspiring vibe of this city & its people.
This is a creative concept-building and idea-trying period for me - I'm figuring out what kind of direction I want to go in with my music and the rest of my art. Recording & releasing songs through this Patreon is part of that!
I want to do vocals for producers, collaborate with other musicians, eventually start a band, work with other artist in different mediums... the possibilities at this point are endless and I'm curious to see where the music takes me from here.
I have quite a few new songs, and I am branching out into new ways of writing, new styles, groovier guitar stuff, creating music in different ways using interesting software as well as just working on my songwriting craft. I have a basic little home recording setup and I enjoy recording my songs, and then immediately throwing them out into the ether to be listened to & enjoyed.
Technically I’ll be recording what in the music industry would be called “demos”. Unless I end up with hundreds of dollars pledged per Thing (to pay other musicians & producers to work on the tracks), these will be generally be me solo, and will not be professionally mixed or mastered. But definitely listenable, and definitely songs I think you’ll enjoy.
Some of these songs may never get released “properly” on an album or anything like that. Or you may receive a demo of a song with me and ukulele and a friend on guitar that in 5 years will be released as some crazy electronica track or full-band funk jam. Who knows??
Basically, I want to make music and art. I want to not overthink it, not have to write out a massive budget plan & timeline to create an album that explodes out into the world and then is forgotten a month later. I just want it to be regular & consistent.
And I want to share it with you!
I hope you'll come along for the ride :)
Q & A:
How does this work?
- You choose how much to pledge per Thing that I release.
- You can pledge at a reward level (see below) and get extra stuff as well as the Things.
- No money comes out of your account until I release a Thing.
- You can put a monthly cap on your pledge, so that if you only have $3 to spare per month, and you’re pledging at the $1 level, and I happen to release 100 things that month (haha)… you’ll still only get charged $3, not $100. (And yes, you’ll still get all the Things.)
- I anticipate I will probably release Things monthly, though perhaps occasionally more often.
- You get my endless love and appreciation and get to be part of this cool community of my pledgers, and get my stuff first before anyone else!
What are the Things going to be, apart from songs?
I suspect that 99% of my output will be songs. However, sometimes I may find myself inspired to spend a month making a photographic series, or writing a mini book of poetry, etc. In that case, I may release the result of that as a Thing instead. I promise that I don’t want to rip you off - it won't just be, like, a kind of artsy selfie - I will put as much work and time into it as I would to a song, and do my best to make it a great Thing worthy of your pledge and the attention of your eyes/ears/nose/mouth/hands/tentacles.
How often will you be releasing Things?
I’m anticipating it will be about once a month. Might be more, might be less. I’ve opted for you pledging per Thing, instead of per month, because I don’t want to feel pressured and freaked out if you’re pledging per month and I find myself away on tour and unable to produce something for you (unlikely, but still). Don’t worry, I won’t suddenly release 100 Things just to get 100x your pledge; and you can put a monthly cap on your pledge, so that no matter how much I release per month, you will only get charged the amount that you set.
How much should I pledge per Thing?
That can depend on a number of factors including but not limited to:
- How much you consider my music/art to be worth (maybe you love it so much you'd like to pay $5 per song/Thing. That's amazing!)
- How much expendable monthly income you have (not a lot? That's fine, $1 a month will still get you the goods! Even if you think my stuff is worth $5 but you only have $1 to spare, I DON'T CARE, I just want you to be involved!)
