I'm starting to make videos at the intersection of the social sciences and philosophy, internet communities, left-wing politics and counter-radicalisation. My full time job is as a PhD researcher at the University of Edinburgh, but I don't want to be the kind of academic whose work languishes in journals that only a dozen people will ever read. That's why I'm on Patreon: so that I can keep producing content that engages, interests and excites a wider audience.

Until recently, my main medium was writing, because it's the only medium I've ever really known. Then I started to dip a toe into writing, filming, and editing video, and now I'm convinced it's the best possible medium for what I want to do. Leveraging eight years of higher education and research to produce YouTube videos is satisfying and rewarding, and I hope that it can reach a wider audience than I ever would if I were just writing my little blog.

I've produced an essay-writing guide which was featured in the Guardian, written linguistic analyses of the alt-right for Quartz, and produced pieces on the Incel community for The Independent. I want to be able to spend more of my time producing this kind of content, as well as promoting it to a wider audience. I can't do that without a sustainable, predictable income, which serving ads and asking for the occasional donation just can't provide.

Most of all, I want to continue to build a relationship with the people who enjoy the things that I produce. I don't want to have to constantly be thinking about the SEO value of the pieces I'm writing, or pushing out half-formed content because I never know what's going to appeal to people. So, supporters will get an inside channel to my work process: we'll be able to have conversations about the topics I've spoken about, and where I should go next. You'll also be able to see works-in-progress, get access to new material before anyone else, and see the bits which never quite make it to the final published version.

If you pledge to support me you'll be contributing to my ability to expand my reach to a wider audience. That in turn means I can spend more time and resources on producing the kind of content you like reading. In the medium-term I'd like to be able to hire part-time research assistants, and maybe even someone who can help me with video and audio editing, so that I can concentrate on research and writing (which I'm good at) rather than production (which I'm decidedly not good at). You'll also be helping to ensure every piece is well-researched, well-produced, and doesn't see the light of day until it's good and ready.

Goals
$76 of $150 per month
$150 per month will allow me to justify spending more time on videos than I currently do, and hopefully start saving for a camera of my own (I'm currently borrowing from a friend, which is suboptimal).
