Rising guitarist Tobias James “performs with great energy, musicality, technique and a genuine enthusiasm for the repertoire” (Jason Vieaux, Grammy-Award winning guitarist) and is bursting onto the musical scene with great passion. A native of Chicago, Tobias was born into a musical family where he started to play Suzuki classical guitar at age six and Suzuki cello at age eight. After studying guitar intensely at the Northwestern High School Music Institute as a freshman in high school, he decided to become a professional musician. Ever since, Tobias has played in halls such as Mixon Hall, Cleveland OH, Lutkin Hall Evanston IL, Hatch Recital Rochester NY and Comstock Concert Hall Louisville KY.
Tobias performs across the United States in many recitals and competitions where he was a prize recipient at Guitar Foundation of America (4th place youth 2012), Indiana International Guitar competition (2nd place youth 2011), All Ohio Stroud Competition (4th place 2014) and many others. In addition, he has competed in the East Carolina Guitar competition, Louisville Guitar competition and others. Recent collaborations have focused on 20th century composers such as Leo Brouwer’s Quintetto, Astor Piazzola’s Tango Sensations, Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Quintetto and recently Dominic Argento’s Letters from Composers with Kaitlyn Angst. Tobias’s vision is to help commission more pieces for guitar and string quartet.
In addition to classical guitar, Tobias is also an avid flamenco guitarist where he accompanies Peabody’s flamenco dance preparatory class. He wishes to bring this tradition back into the classical realm by commissioning new pieces that incorporate elements of Flamenco as well as performing solo works of flamenco guitarists. He is currently developing a project to introduce and teach Flamenco guitar to high school students in the Baltimore area.
As a pedagogue, Tobias strives to incorporate technology with teaching as a way of reaching communities that would not have otherwise received normal music lessons. In addition, Tobias’s vision is to have publicly accessible short videos on the internet that teach certain fundamentals of the guitar in the most approachable way so that anyone can learn. He has worked on similar projects with the Distance learning department at the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) as an apprentice where he taught guitar and music to people of various backgrounds and age groups in televised conferences via the internet. While at CIM, he studied Eurythmics under Brian Sweigart and incorporates this pedagogical tool to enhance his teaching.
Tobias currently is studying at the Peabody Institute on Scholarship with Julian Gray obtaining a Masters of Music in Guitar Performance and Pedagogy. He received his bachelors in Guitar Performance at CIM with Jason Vieaux and Colin Davin with a minor in mathematics from Case Western Reserve University.

I would like to make recordings of Eduardo Sainz de La Maza's Suite Platero. This is a very beautiful piece that is not played frequently and deserves recognition. The goal earning amount is primarily to fund recording time and editing with an audio engineer.
