Hey, folks! I’m Todd Keisling. I’m an author of horror and speculative fiction. I’ve written several books, essays, and numerous short stories, several of which have been published in recent years. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. It’s my passion, it sustains me day to day, and I’d like to keep doing it.

In mid-February, I was laid off from my day job of 12 years. Once my severance runs out in a few months, my wife and I will lose our insurance and a steady household income. We both have health issues that require regular maintenance medications, and without the insurance, we’re looking at a substantial increase in monthly costs.

Yeah. It sucks.

So, here’s the thing: I wasn’t happy at that day job, and I’m trying to look at this recent life-changing event as an opportunity.

The day job provided a steady income and health insurance for my family. That income enabled me to invest in my writing career, attend conferences, start a specialty micro-press called Precipice Books, and more. I’ve built a solid platform for my creative endeavors over the last decade, but I could’ve done more. The problem was always time itself: I never had enough of it.

Now, for the first time since college, I’m without a steady job—and I have plenty of time. The downside is, I will soon be without a steady income to subsidize all those creative endeavors.

That’s where Patreon comes in. I have an opportunity here to make a real go of things and pursue every writer’s dream of having a sustainable income based on creative work alone. In return, I’ll make my twisted imagination available to you, invite you behind the curtain, and share my years of writing and publishing experience with you.

I want to use this time I’ve been given to invest in my writing career and increase my creative output. With your patronage, you’ll be taking some of the burden off my shoulders and granting me peace of mind.

My initial goal is $500 a month. That will cover our prescription costs, grant you inside access to my creative process, and provide you a variety of professional consultation across the indie publishing spectrum.

If I can somehow manage to earn $4000/month here, I’ll be able to do this full time. I know it’s not going to happen overnight, but with enough people pitching in a few bucks here and there, I think we can reach that goal.

I’m offering two types of content: Reader-Focused Content and Writer-Focused Content.

For readers, I will offer regular glimpses into my writing process, including (but not limited to) early story drafts and notes, video blogs discussing my current creative endeavors and/or roadblocks, and more. I want to pull back the curtain, reveal all the gears and magic that make this weird writing machine function, and I want you to join me in the process.

For the writers out there, I’ve got a wealth of knowledge to share. My years as a publisher, book designer, and even as an accountant (thanks, day job!) are all at your service. What I can offer are regular discussions about the publishing process, tips on editing and writing, input on the philosophy of good book design, and simple tricks to manage the business side of your writing career.

Each tier of patronage will entitle you to more content, and when we reach a milestone, I’ll throw in more incentives like story feedback, signed print copies, and more.

Here’s what I’d like to accomplish in the next 12 months:

  • Finish the first draft of a thriller novel, tentatively titled REVELATION ROAD, before the end of summer.
  • Answer several open submission calls for a number of upcoming anthologies, a couple of which are by invitation only.
  • Compile my next collection of short fiction.
  • Fulfill my book deal with Bloodshot Books ahead of schedule.
  • Work on my mental health, go for more walks, and generally try to be healthier than I am. Being healthy in mind goes a long way when I’m writing.

The bottom line: Your patronage makes this road a bit easier to travel. Whether you pledge a couple of dollars or even tens of dollars, I’m eternally grateful for your patronage and support. Thanks for reading, and thanks for helping a regular guy reach for his dreams.
