Hi, my name's Tom Nicholas and I'm a PhD Student based in the UK. For the past 2 years, I've been creating a series of educational videos on YouTube primarily focussing on providing accessible introductions to key theories in cultural studies and the wider humanities.

To date, my What The Theory? series has covered topics such as Semiotics, Phenomenology, Modernism, Postmodernism, Postcolonialism and Cultural Materialism to name but a few. These videos have been viewed over 600,000 times and helped numerous students, and others, increase their understanding of theory and culture.

I also occasionally intersperse these videos with video essays which looks to put some of the concepts explored in my What the Theory? series into practice in an engaging way; usually through looking at some aspect of contemporary film and television.

I've been truly bowled over by the response to my videos over the past two years. The generous and inquisitive comments that follow the release of each of my videos has shown me that there's real value and potential in creating a space for humanities-based, educational content on YouTube.

As such, I want to continue to add to these series in order to cover more topics and perhaps revisit subjects I have already covered but in greater depth.

Doing so, however, takes time and resources.

As my videos have reached more and more people, I've been passionate about improving their academic rigour and my educational approach. While I think this has had an observable impact on the quality of my videos, the added research, writing, filming and editing that this requires is significant.

My goals with this Patreon page, then, are twofold:

The first is to increase the sustainability of my channel.

Reaching out for cash support is always a little bit awkward, but my hope is that some of you who have learned something from my videos might be willing to contribute a small amount to ensure I can continue to make more; not only for yourselves but also so they'll be there for that next person who wants a complex idea explained in an accessible and engaging way.

The second is to build a space where I can better interact with those who like learning and like my approach to explaining stuff.

Feedback from the beautifully inquisitive people who watch my videos has always been central to my attempts to improve what I do, but YouTube itself doesn't always have the right functionality for those conversations. Assuming anyone signs up (!), I'd like this page to grow into a space where I can solicit suggestions and receive constructive feedback on my existing videos and discuss with you exactly where it might go next.

I realise that not everyone will be able to reach into their pockets and support the channel and would hate to create an expectation for anyone to. But, if you're able, and would like to help me to continue to carve out a space for humanities-based, educational content on YouTube, then I would be incredibly grateful.
