Trafika Europe Radio the world’s first literary podcast radio station – will launch on “20 20 20” – January 20, 2020 – and we really need your help!!!

This is a whole new medium for literature. We want to help literary communities from across the map of Europe reach an international, English-speaking audience online – to help keep borders open culturally, raise up the level of conversation in and about literature, and enjoy great new writing in a whole new way.

Nothing like this has ever been done before!

With a wide variety of weekly audio podcast series by partner-producers, we’ll be connecting, presenting and enjoying new literature, “literary music”, news and cultural discussion from a remarkable variety of cultures.

In today’s climate, we can all step up to the plate a little more, to help maintain the openness and cultural interchange we’ve come to take for granted in literature across borders.

If you agree this new piece of infrastructure for literature is exciting, vital – and long-overdue – then won’t you please support us by becoming a sustaining subscriber here?

For less than the cost of a latte or a city subway ticket per month, you can help make a piece of literary history, and make a real difference for thousands of writers in the 47 countries of Council of Europe.

Please take a moment to watch our introductory video above, for all details – it was created by our Art Director and in-house animator, Mark Boston -- and gives the best idea of our Radio plans.

Our Background

You may already know Trafika Europe for our online literary journal, with its exciting selection of writers and visual artists… or the original literary animated videos we commission and share on our YouTube channel . Maybe you’ve heard some of the audio interviews we’ve posted with authors, translators and publishers on our Mixcloud page. Maybe you are already using our online literary events calendar, or you’ve visited our fine European bookshop online. Or maybe you’ve attended one of the many Trafika Europe literary events we’ve hosted.

These efforts show our sustained, strong and unwavering commitment to literature – we’ve already presented hundreds of authors from an amazing variety of cultures to the world.
You can check out our literary journal right here!

We have been doing all this for free, in service to literature, because we’re this passionate about keeping European cultures open and growing together, and celebrating and sharing great new literature. We see the rewards of this continually -- and it's a great way to get to know the world.

Our Radio Launch

Now with the pending launch of Trafika Europe Radio we’re really upping our game.

It’s a virtual coffeehouse for the 21st century
! We want to create and nurture a space in our new media landscape online, to help restore the centrality which literature and culture can have in our international dialogue.

Isn’t this worth a cup of coffee a month? This really is a community effort!

We so much need your help just now: to purchase a dedicated server, complete the programming for our online radio, license the streaming service, support series development – including for some endangered literary cultures – and to manage and administrate the whole thing ongoing.

We’re working at a tiny fraction of the budget of a commercial publisher or radio – preparing to make a big splash in support of our brothers and sisters across Europe – and we just can’t do it without you! Please help if you can!

We've got some great rewards here... Salmon Poetry, Inner Child Press, and New Europe Books have all donated boxes of books to this campaign -- because they share our vital mission to build this greater community for and around literature.

…with more rewards to come! We’ll be adding bonus rewards for anyone who signs on here, in the months to come – premium podcast content for our Patreon supporters to enjoy, discounts on great new book releases, and more! So, stay tuned for that!

Won't you please join us? Together, we can help Europe stay open and interacting in culture -- and come to know these great literary cultures in-depth as never before. Help us write this next chapter in literature, and we can step forward all together.

What others have said about us

“…groundbreaking… well worth a look. A long look.”
Tessa Dick, author, former wife of author Philip K. Dick

“certainly demonstrate[s]… that the European experience is being intelligently documented”
West Camel, author & editor

“These translations don’t just offer fascinating windows into the preoccupations of writers from other European nations – in some cases they also offer insights into how these nations see each other. … [T]here can be few better ways of developing an understanding of another culture than by reading (or listening to) the stories it tells itself; and if we are to continue to play a sensible, grown-up role in the European project, then projects like Trafika Europe may help to plug an important gap.”
Roger Cox, The Scotsman

“Please support Trafika Europe. These people are passionate about literature, and they know what they are doing… to great benefit of readers and writers alike.”
Magdaléna Platzová, author

“Trafika Europe performs a unique service, helping to keep together, and actually helping to bind together, the diverse and often mutually unknown and unrecognized cultures of Europe through the most basic and effective means possible: the heart and the creative imagination. Literature is the great harmonizer, the road to the discovery of common roots and the prospect of a common destiny. Readers of Trafika Europe will benefit from the rich literary heritage of this great cultural sphere.”
Prof. Dr. Ervin László, founder, International Club of Budapest

"Kudos to Trafika Europe for their energetic exploratory work… [S]park[s] thought and talk about the startling variety and less visible unities of European writing.”
John Taylor, poet, translator & European literature essayist

"...rarely heard and distinctive voices from the gorgeous polyphonic chant of European literature. Occitan, Catalan, Faroese, Shetland Scots, Icelandic, Armenian, and more—the languages toll like bells ringing in counterpoint to accustomed strains. These ‘trajectories of longing,’ beautifully told with particulars strange and familiar, will stir your soul.”
Tess Lewis, translator

"...highlights the diversity of literatures from across the European continent in a time when the very idea of European identity is a pressing social issue.”
Will Evans, Publisher, Deep Vellum Publishing

"...a really worthwhile cause... I want to start listening to as many of these shows as posssible... An amazing education in things that I never knew existed... like mining a wealth of precious minerals of culture... I hope that everyone will consider supporting this wonderful project.”

Anton Yakovlev, poet, Education Director at Bowery Poetry Club

There are other ways you can help!

  • Please share news of this campaign all over the place! We haven’t got an advertising budget -- we’re dependent on word of mouth to get the word out. So thanks especially for sharing this news.

We’re happy to receive any inquiries about other kinds of support and participation. There’s lots to do! Please feel free to email us: [email protected].

We really need your help! How often do we get a chance to make a difference in this way?

Our job is quite a lot easier than the economist or the politician -- but we really do need to take this responsibility seriously, all of us, to maintain this cultural openness and move forward together.

Please help us get across the finish line now with Trafika Europe Radio.
