I believe in a world that is just and a digital business model that benefits creators first.

With the non-profit Type.World project I want to help facilitate the power shift from centralized font market places towards a decentralized ecosystem that benefits the creators and publishers of fonts and its consumers.

With Type.World, I want to improve the visibility of independent font publishers in face of the customers and improve the customers’ font user experience through two projects, the Type.World font installer, and the Fair Fonts platform.

The Vision

Non-exhaustive overview illustrating the facilitation of a decentralized font business ecosystem through API calls. The publisher’s side is represented by Type Network reselling high quality fonts, Fontdue as a backend-as-a-service, as well as unnumbered and unnamed independent publishers. In the above overview, these three stand as non-exhaustive examples for different font retail approaches.

Coming up: the Type.World app

In the short term, the Type.World app as a customer front end for font distribution will massively improve the font installation user experience.
Available natively for Mac and Windows (and later Linux), the app will streamline the font installation experience starting at the publisher’s web sites, and enable customers to indefinitely keep their font subscriptions through the app’s user account (much like you keep all your purchased apps in contemporary app stores). Through the user account, the font subscriptions can by synced to another computer or restored on a new one after a computer has suddenly broken or got stolen.

The app is currently in active development with a relatively stable beta version expected by the end of 2018. The Mac and Windows clients can be downloaded and tested at https://type.world/app/.

All necessary information to participate in the technology is gathered here: https://type.world/developers/

By the end of 2019 the app should be finalized and distributable through the Mac App Store as well as the Windows Store for maximum ease of installation.

The app’s development is currently lead by German type designer and multi media artist Yanone, with the Github-based subscriptions being currently designed by Sri Lankan type designer Pathum Egodawatta.

Later: The Fair Fonts platform

The FairFonts.org platform will act as a marketing tool for customers to search and find all those fonts which are available to buy directly from their manufacturers.

The font directory will be available as a web site with a searchable database as well as a mobile app whose user experience will be similar to Instagram – discover, like, and share independent fonts with your friends and colleagues.

Who should fund?

If you’re an independent type publisher and you want to improve the font user experience for your customers, this project is for you and you should fund it.

If you’re a custom type shop and the Type.World app would massively improve your custom type design work flow, this project is for you and you should fund it.

Once the Type.World app is finished, we can address Fair Fonts as a marketing platform.

Neither of the two platforms have plans to involve themselves in sales of fonts. The core idea is to drive sales directly into the hands of the publishers.

If you believe in my vision, contribute today to make it a reality.
Because good work needs to be funded.
Forever thankful,
