Welcome to the Unchurching Patreon page!
Do you love Jesus, but don't love today's institutional churches? Do you think churches should be communities, not corporations? Then maybe you should start unchurching! Unchurching is the process of deconstructing today's institutional church model, in order to reclaim our identity as the church. Meaning, unchurching is about being the church, without going to church. (P.S. If you're on a mobile device, please click here to watch the short intro video. It explains a lot!)

Why I do what I do
I know what it's like to be the only one in your circle who has questions and concerns about the way we're doing church. I also know what it's like to leave the institutional church and feel all alone in the spiritual desert, wondering if you're really hearing from God, wondering why you're the only one who seems bothered by the disconnect between the vibrant, Christ-centered church communities you read about in the Bible versus the business-like, church-centered programs we attend on Sunday mornings.
When I realized I wasn't alone, when I discovered there are actually millions of believers who think and feel just like I do about the church, it was life-changing. I'm not just talking about former churchgoers who were hurt and offended by the church (though that's how we often get labeled), but devout believers who know there must be something more than just sitting in a pew, listening to a sermon, and supporting another building project. I'm talking about folks who genuinely want to shake up the world, just like the first Christians did.
If you're unsatisfied with church-as-usual, and you want your faith to really count for something, then you owe it to yourself to check out this page and all the various unchurching resources. Be open-minded, pray about it, and listen to what the Lord has to say to you as you click on some of the links below.
When I started this page (and recorded the intro video), a lot of my focus was on trying to build an online community in the hope it would be a springboard to real-world community: people making friendships, hosting neighborhood events, forming new house churches, etc. And, yes, all of those things did happen to some degree. However, the most powerful moments seem to happen whenever I organized a local meetup and when we brought people together from all over the country for our unconferernce.
So, my focus for this next season is to try to do more of that. Instead of focusing on online community as the starting place to create real-world community, I want to see what happens if we flip the script and focus on real-world events, then use social media and such to help attendees remain connected after each event. Here are some of the cartoons I've created for social media. I love it whenever people share these; they're usually great conversation starters.
I've shared many of the main concepts from my book, Unchurching, in the form of animated explainer videos. To check these out, please visit my YouTube channel.
The Unchurching Community really rallied together to make this comic book happen. You can read the entire comic book online for free right here.
It took about fifteen years to write Unchurching: Christianity Without Churchianity. If you're frustrated with today's institutional church model, this is the book you've been looking for.
The Unchurching Podcast is a great supplement to the book. We tackle questions from readers and listeners, have amazing interviews with unchurching folks all around the world, and more. You can check out the podcast online here, or on iTunes, or Google Play.
Hello, my name is Richard Jacobson. I'm an ex-pastor, an artist, and the author of Unchurching: Christianity Without Churchianity. In addition to my book, I've created several cartoons, a series of animated videos, a podcast, and an online comic book about unchurching (all of which you can find here on the Unchurching Website). I also recently co-facilitated an "unconference" and I've coordinated multiple Unchurching Meetups in various parts of the country.
Of course, much of what I do wouldn't even be possible without the generous support of the Unchurching Community. So, whether you're a reader of the book or the comic, a listener of the podcast, or a fan of the animated videos and cartoons, I hope you'll consider becoming a patron in order to support more Unchurching projects and events.
