Everyone here has reflected on the purpose of the Un/Learning Club, and the value of anti-racist media literacy. If you're here, I'm hearing something to the effect of: "I see the work you're trying to do, Sasha, and I believe in it!" Thank you so much for your support.

About

The Un/Learning Club is committed to practicing anti-racism when it comes to the way we watch movies. Inspired by the free Black Lives collection available on the Criterion Channel during the month of June, each week is focused on a different film that has been excluded from our private film school educations and mainstream cultural discourse. The disease of white supremacy has infected both the media we consume and the ways we consume it; the Un/Learning Club's ultimate goal is to confront and upend the inherent racism we've received in our training for the world, to acknowledge the power of film in shaping, creating, and disrupting ideology, and to take responsibility in our role as actively anti-racist audiences.

WHO AM I, YOU MAY BE WONDERING: I am a 26 year old white woman from Cape Elizabeth, Maine currently living in Los Angeles. I have a BA in English/Screen Studies from Clark University, an MA in Cinema & Media Studies from USC, and a few years of freelance writing under my belt. I daresay I began to become radicalized by the 2016 election, and in February 2017 I launched Germinal, an online magazine for political art and writing from youth around the world. I've also been very lucky to have learned about the world of film writing from Chaz Ebert and the Roger Ebert Foundation. In the combined wake(s) of COVID-19, the impending/ongoing recession, and the death of George Floyd which has ignited the global reach of BLM to an unprecedented degree, I've been making active anti-racism my full-time job. I'm learning and messing up as much as anyone, and I'm hoping the Unlearning Club can be a community for people like me who love to learn from culture and critically examine the ways we consume art.

Happy watching, cinephiles! Please share far and wide to your movie loving friends and family. <3
