Guess what? I’m entering my “golden years” now and the Internet has successfully steamrolled most of my freelance print clients into the dust.

Which brings me to Patreon. I need patrons who like the stuff that I’ve already done, would like me to continue being uninhibitedly creative, and can spare modest amounts of money regularly to make that possible on an ongoing basis.

Here’s a quick summary of what my career has looked like so far. I’ve been a full-time professional writer/cartoonist since 1979 and had already been a part-time illustrator and comics-creator (most notably in underground comix) for more than a decade before that. In 1980 I was the founding editor of the Gay Comix series, and through much of the 1980s I wrote and drew the comic strip series Wendel for the LGBT news magazine The Advocate.

I’m best known for my 1995 graphic novel Stuck Rubber Baby, which earned Eisner and Harvey Awards in the U.S; a “best one-off” comix in the U.K.; and, in translation, a Luchs Award in Germany, a Prix de la critique at the International Comics Festival in Angouleme, and a Comics Critics Award in Spain.

Many of my episodic comics have been compiled in book collections like Dancin’ Nekkid With the Angels, Early Barefootz, The Complete Wendel, and most recently The Other Sides of Howard Cruse. For my work as a whole I was honored with a “Legend of Comics Award” at the 2017 Denver Independent Comic and Arts Expo and a “Transformative Work Award” at the 2016 Cartoon Crossroads Columbus conference in Ohio. You can do some browsing in my expansive web site Howard Cruse Central (www.howardcruse.com) if you’d like to learn more.

I’d like to keep my creativity rolling by creating both writing and drawings going forward. That will only work if I get more regular funding than is on the horizon right now. So that’s where those of you who're reading this come in. If enough of you become patrons, you can collectively make interesting new Howard Cruse projects more possible.
