A new song, sad but filled with hope

Good morning my beloved Patreon family! As I promised you in my last post yesterday I recorded a simple demo of my new song that I wrote in the past week and here it is!

It is quite different from what I have been writing, much more personal and not exactly happy vibes...but this is where I am and I can only speak my Heart.

My beloved Partner of a year and a half and I have decided to part ways to allow each other the time and space to grow as individuals and focus on our paths, with the hope and the intention of finding each other again. I wrote this song at a time when I was still unsure on what to do but as always music comes as healing and clarity is my Friend again.

We're both way too blessed to be stressed, and there is still so much Love in our heart for each other, it's just that sometimes Love loves by letting go...

I hope you enjoy, I am so so happy to share this with you guys before anyone else <3

My dearest, lovely Patrons, I am alive, I have been going through quite an emotional roller coaster for heart related matters but I am well and I have been writing. On Tuesday I went to Margate to have some space, solitude and time to sit  and work through what's been going on within me. Now clarity is my Friend again, and I am excited to have a brand new song to share with you all (before anyone else gets to hear it, because you are way cooler!). I am in the studio today and I'll try to get a simple recording done to send your way asap!

Thank you so so much for being here, as of now your support and kindness are keeping me alive, figuratively and literally

Eva Machado So good to hear from you brother, literally you are beautiful, looking forward to hear the song, its amazing how a sound created through you in the space of solitude has only been heard by the wind, trees and ocean, there it remains until your hands carve it into soundwaves and compress the harmonic resonance of your soul, poured into a file that will travel in the cosmicweb to us. This amazing communion of hearts is here thanks to you, enchanted by the spell of your music. i woooowwwwwve you, xxx

VIDEO: 'Empty' by Ray LaMontagne (with Jessica Allossery)

Almost a year ago, the lovely Jessica Allossery got in touch with me after having found my page on Patreon. She's a Canadian songstress and we've become great friends (she's also a creator on Patreon, ain't this community delightful)!

As fate would have it, Jessica was recently flown to Europe for musical shenanigans, and she came and spent a week in London! In that time we had some lovely adventures and recorded TWO video covers.

So, without further ado, please enjoy the first, my choice of a song called 'Empty', by Ray LaMontagne! This is one of my ALL-TIME favourite songs, so it's a huge honour to cover it, especially with someone as delightful as Jessica. See if you agree :).

ALSO, I am officially making vlogs (video blogs) on youtube! I've created several already, using my new camera (thanks again everyone), and you can follow my adventures via youtube, so subscribe there if ya dig the vibe: http://bit.ly/troubadour-vlog.

I don't think I'll share all my vlogs here on Patreon, because I don't want to overwhelm your inboxes and I may be sharing a lot :D. For me, Patreon is a way to share my early rough works-in-progress and give you early access to finished pieces as downloads, videos, soundcloud links, etc. Let me know what you think about that, I'm totally open to suggestions :).

Thank you all for your presence, and if you haven't commented much, now's the time to say hi! The best part of Patreon is that this is a community, so get involved, I'd love to hear the story of You!

Magical hugs

Your troubadour

Nate

Wendy S Herdman My mid-tone hearing loss doesn't help either, some voices fall right in my worst range and I suspect that was part of the problem. You've a beautiful expressive voice, Jessica, so I really wanted to hear it better. Nate-good call. Recently got some new headphones, tweaked to my specific needs, and they helped quite a bit. :)

Hey everyone! SO, I've confirmed my first show back in London, which is so exciting! Event is here: https://tigmus.com/shows/94. I know the evening will be filmed, which is SO GREAT, cos then I can share it with you after. I'm currently also finding out if I can stream the night to you live online, which would be even way betterer;)! I'll keep you updated, but in the meantime please book your seats (all you London Nateives) and help spread the word to all your London friends (even if you're not in London). If all goes according to plan, fellow Patreon creator Jessica Allossery will be opening the evening with her lovely tunes, which is soooooo awesome! Big hugs and love Nate PS: the thing about this show, is that it only happens if enough people pledge for it, so it's a bit of a gamble on my part...but I wanted to do something special, so I'm taking the risk. T-Shirts designed by YOU (if you want)

How would you like Nate Maingard t-shirts designed by you or your fellow Nateives? T-shirts have been on my mind for a long time, along with other merchandise. It's just never come together due to the logistics of cost of printing and design...and then recently both Beatrice and Samantha mentioned they'd love t-shirts, plus I found a website that allows print on demand t-shirts, so I don't have to fork out hundreds of pounds on loads of t-shirts! The stars have aligned! SO, here's the idea: Many of you are super visually creative and I'd be the happiest guy ever to have your designs on t-shirts! Some things I think which could be cool: - Illustrations based on songs - Lyrics, or parts of lyrics - Comic strips - 'Nateives Tribe' styled artwork/banner/logo/motto/family crest - photos of me/you/us interestingly edited into designs - whatever your imagination wishes I'm thinking it'd be fun if you share your designs with me, then I'll share them here on Patreon and the ones with the most yes votes will end up on the t-shirts! We can even add/change designs every few months! WHAT DO YOU THINK!??? Click 'check it out' below to leave your feedback in the comments! Things to know for designers: 1. the t-shirts will be white, so design with that in mind. 2. the design must fit into a specific area (3508px wide x 4961px high). 3. Make sure you scan your design in HIGH resolution, or take HIGH quality -very clear- photos so that the design looks great when printed. If designing on a computer, make sure it's CMYK, in JPG format and in 300 DPI. 4. I think we should have 'Nate Maingard' somewhere in every design to help spread the word (open to disagreement here, as always). I can always add this to your image later if you are ok with that :). EMAIL DESIGNS TO ME: [email protected] Love you all, all the way through, as always :). Excited to hear what you think of this! Hugs and love Nate PS: welcome to two new patrons this month so far, you give wings to this heart of mine (SO much better than that red bull crap, hehe)

Shay Castro If only I was able to put into 'paper' the idea in my head.... Basically, I see Nates charms and hat - the wide brim one - worn by a coyote on the bottom right and then across the chest is artistically written '<<...The Little Things...>>' and then his signature right underneath. And that's it!! Simple, yet very much about Nate and his music. At least to me. =/

July 8, 2015 17:39:19 · Reply

Nate Maingard I love this idea Shay! What do you mean by my 'charms'? I think I may know someone who could create something like this, but in a cartoonish style, what ya reckon?

July 9, 2015 08:32:25 · Reply

Shay Castro Your charms like the bobbles in your hair or your wrist bracelets / bands. The scarfs or a necklaces you wear....anklets if you wear them, etc. Depending on what is easiest for the artist them self, since you have different items that i've seen so far. But yes, a cartoon style would be really cute!! But not too much detail I would think. Simple lines and shading. In these ideas, I wish I could draw!! Arg.... But what do you think of that idea? Hopefully it's not too vague...

New song, featuring my dad!!

Firstly, WELCOME to 11 new Nateives this month already, I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!! Ok, onwards! My dad has always been one of my favourite people in the world. He's an example of a life lived with passion and dedication. He's healthy, energetic, enthusiastic and incredibly musical. While sitting on his porch during my visit, I wrote this little song, called Keep It Simple. My dad embodies this lifestyle so well and so it's really great that he could play on this recording with me. On this tune, he's playing harmonica and a crazy flute made of a single piece of black plastic piping. It's insanely cool how he does it :D. In case you're curious, he also plays piano, guitar, vocals and normal flute! My dear Nateives, I am so grateful to have YOU in my world! Today we reached $1200, which means that after patreon and credit card fees (and inevitable declined pledges), I will be making around $1000 per month (so it's the actual milestone, hehe). THANK YOU! SHRUB Nateives ($5) and up, the link to your downloads of this and all my other new songs is available right here: http://bit.ly/shrubs-and-up-downloads All the love Your troubadour Nate LYRICS: My papa's dog's lie at my feet Hunting deep within their dreams I sit and dream of all this life can be My washing hangs upon the line Drying in the sweet sunshine Remind me I love simplicity Keep it simple keep it real Keep on sharing what you feel These words are ringing like a bell Live it slow, love it well I chose this life not long ago To live in love and let it flow To share with open heart all that I know And in my mind I can see your faces You who know life is not a race We don't have much time, we must move slow Keep it simple keep it real Keep on sharing what you feel These words are ringing like a bell Live it slow, love it well My bare feet walk along the sand My Friend and I walk hand in hand My Friend is Everything, now do you see? I naked fall into the ocean Overcome by a deep emotion Washing clean all I no longer need PS: BONUS INSIDER INFO --> the verse about 'in my mind I can see your faces', I was thinking so much about all of y'all, cos you are some of the people who totally get the vibes I'm all about :D PPS: the only way my music gets out to the world is through you all sharing is, so please do like and share it with all your friends, help bring a little Nate into their lives :D. Subbable and Patreon are Joining Forces

A note from Jack Conte, CEO and cofounder @ Patreon I’m pumped! Today Patreon and Subbable are officially joining forces! For those of you who don’t know Subbable, it’s a subscription payments service, much like Patreon, that allows fans to make monthly payments to creators. And it was founded by Hank and John Green. That’s right. The Vlogbrothers! The guys who were vlogging before vlogging was a thing. The guys who founded DFTBA (The record label - Don’t Forget to Be Awesome). The guys who founded VidCon. The short version of the story is this: creators on Subbable were about to see a 30 to 40% decrease in their monthly income, due to a change within Amazon Payments (Subbable’s payments processor). Super bad news bears. Imagine your next paycheck comes in the mail (or direct deposit if you’re super saucy and modern), and it’s two thirds of what you were expecting. So what could be done? Here’s a recap of my text convo with Hank, when it all started: " me: Talked to Michael yesterday. Basically you guys are going to have to ask all of your users to re-pledge and go through another sign up process if you change to PayPal. Give that there will be attrition, if you did want to join forces, this would be the time. Totally happy to help you guys move to PayPal, of course, but just wanted to make sure you knew that there's a natural, unique window right now, if you decide to ditch Amazon. Hank: We are going to have a meeting about this very thing in about an hour :-) me: Ok me: Cooooool " Patreon proposed a solution, dreamed up by my cofounder extraordinaire, Sam Yam: If Subbable creators launched on Patreon, we would reduce the effect of "drop off" by matching the first 45 days of pledges, up to $100,000. This “matching program” would do three things: 1) Creators would get a solid paycheck, even if all their subscribers don’t immediately migrate to Patreon. 2) The matching program would incentivize creators to mobilize their audiences effectively and immediately, knowing that their first month of funds would be matched. 3) It would generate excitement about the transfer, incentivizing patrons to pledge even more, knowing that their payments would be effectively doubled. (Quick side note: We realize that creators who are NOT on Subbable would also love some help from Patreon. So we’re starting an Arts Grant program later this year that gives all creators a chance to qualify for some extra funding, but I’m not going to get into that quite yet….) I want to make one thing painfully clear about this deal: the Matching Program means an extra $100,000 is going to creators. Not to Hank and John Green. Patreon IS acquiring Subbable and money IS changing hands, but MOST of the money that Patreon is spending on this acquisition is going to the matching program. And that’s what Hank and John wanted. Do you see what I’m saying here? I want people to understand how awesomely principled Hank and John are being. It’s a testament to the path that they have walked for years. It would have been possible for them to “exit” more traditionally, with a giant chunk of happy cash waiting for them at the end of the rainbow. But they wanted that cash to be diverted to Subbable’s creators. AND I THINK THAT’S KICK ASS. I use the term “Creator First” a lot at Patreon. And I use it as an adjective. But it’s not. “Creator First” is action. It’s behavior. It’s tough decisions for the benefit of the people within the ecosystem. And it’s not just a bunch of lalala optimistic hippy talk. It’s a business model. It’s having the confidence in our business to always put our customers’ interests ahead of our own. (That’s you, creators!) It’s knowing that in the long run, the devoted people who comprise Patreon will build ultimate utility for creators, and we will have endless wells of endurance to fuel our mission. Small, day-to-day sacrifices must be allowed to fade into the background. Patreon is Creator First, and damnit, so are Hank and John. They exemplify Creator First, not only in philosophy, but in action. Hank and John, I am so excited to be working with you dudes. And we are honored to have Subbable’s awesome creators on Patreon. I think this is the start of a long relationship and the continuation of an increasingly swift return to classical patronage. DFTBA, Jack

A new short doc about me (you all get a big mention)

Hello lovely Nateives I'm out in the middle of nowhere at my dad's house. Internet is TERRIBLE, so can't upload any new videos, or much else. For now, here is an amazing new video shot by Greg, telling the story of your favourite troubadour ;). There's some footage from my last house concert in London, so a few of you are in there too, yay! Sending you all much love, you're all in my thoughts and heart all the time. I have some ideas I'll be sharing as soon as I can get some good internet again :D. If you have a moment and enjoy the video, please watch it on youtube, like it, leave a comment and share it too. All of that helps loads more than many people think. How are you all doing? Oh, AND, HUGE (!!!) welcome to all the new Nateives, y'all are so darn cool for signing up :D. Where are you from, what are your passions, what brought you here? Love love love Nate

Graham Noble Nice little doc and good insight into the life of a troubadour! I enjoyed that! I also think that everyone should have terrible Internet on occasion! It encourages us to look away from our tiny screens and look at the world around us, good and bad.

Ségo I find this doc really well made! It's nice to hear a bit more of your perception of your art, and funny to recognize some of the beautiful souls who were present at your house concert... And was this video shot (I mean that parts when you speak) after you went back to South Africa? Because it sounds to me like your accent is slightly stronger...

Aditya Thakur Lovely Nate. Just showed two live versions of I will devour to my sis. If a first time listener can listen to your song twice in a row, there's something great about your music. Good music, great lyrics and some catchy tunes! Now I'll be humming "seek and you shall find" for a few days!
