A cover of a song very special to me

John Lennon is one of my all-time biggest inspirations and I've always wanted to make a video covering his song Working Class Hero. I hope it's ok with y'all that this is a cover, but I felt strongly that I wanted this to be my featured creation for this month, to honour one of the greatest songwriters who has influenced my views on the world. This is also the first video I've ever shot using 'pro' lighting, which I set up today and purchased with some of the money from your pledges, so thanks! Positive feedback and constructive criticism welcome :D. Big hugs to all y'all! Nate PS: this video is currently only available to you, the #nateives, but you're welcome to share this post with your friends. I'll make it public in about a week, once you've had a chance to enjoy it first :D

Martina Bedregal Calderón A very soulful cover of this great and sociocritical song of John Lennon. It's still so true and close to the situation in our countries nowadays.

Kept It Hid - May Creation #2!

Dear nateives I didn't know this song was going to come out of me. I sat in my room and began playing and suddenly I was singing about a woman I met in 2011 in South Africa. She was a big part of my life journey, helping me to heal some of my personal traumas, but I lacked compassion in the way I interacted with her and it ended really badly. I messed up and kept trying to fix it, but it was already too late. It finally ended when I went to a party I knew she was going to be at and when I saw how upset she was that I was there, I tried to be the 'nice guy'. I walked up and said I'd leave if it was causing problems. She punched me in the face and left. It took me a really long time to realise that I was the one in the wrong. I had pushed her so far past her boundaries that she reacted with violence to defend herself. So, by me playing the 'nice guy' I was really being shitty. It was a big lesson to learn. Sometimes I've got to accept the things I cannot change. Anyway, I think of her often and how sad I am that in my own attempts to work this life out I've hurt other people along the way. This song is for her but it's also for anyone who has been hurt, or who has caused hurt. Forgiveness is the most precious gift we can give ourselves and others. Thank you for the incredible feedback I've already received from many of you, I so so so appreciate it! Settled on the name "Kept It Hid", I feel it holds many of the things this song means to me. I will say that I am incredibly proud of this recording, it carries so much passion and warmth. I've never managed to capture sound this good by myself before, so YAY! I thank you all for inspiring me to dive ever deeper into myself and my art. Big gratitude! Much love to you all, thank you for being incredible! Hugs Nate PS: as this is an official, 'Creation', anyone who has not set their monthly 'cap' yet will be charged twice this month. If this happens, and you are not ok with it, please let me know and I'll refund you or make sure you don't get charged in the first place! FINALLY, for those who love lyrics, here they are: I knew you would be there In my pride I didn't care Thought with a smile I would make it right My busted lip is a testament to that night You defended yourself wisely From all the pride that lived in me And all I wish for lady Is to say that I'm sorry I'm sorry for the pain I caused you Sorry for the harm I did In my own own hurt I hurt everyone Yes I was hurting too though I kept it hid I was hurting too though I kept it hid Do not hide yourself again Just 'cos I made those mistakes You taught me how to play again Finding solace in the love that we made I'm sorry for the pain I caused you Sorry for the harm I did In my own own hurt I hurt everyone Yes I was hurting too though I kept it hid I was hurting too though I kept it hid PPS: all Fresh Green Nateives ($5) and up will be getting a download of this too in another post, so watch out for that one :D PPPS: Ok, this is getting ridiculous, haha: but, the video is currently 'unlisted', which means only people with a link can see it. Feel free to share it to your heart's content, you have the POWER! I'll only be making it publicly available in a few days, so you all have a chance to enjoy it first...Cos you are AWESOME :D :P

Jodi Symmonds So when I first listened to this song I thought it was brilliant, however, I was on bust public transport and so it was quite difficult to take it in. Now I have listened to it again and again. And again. Can't stop listening to it. I think it might be one of the most beautifully raw sogs I have ever heard. The lyrics are beautiful, and combined with the way you sing it I just feel so much... heart clenching sadness, yet a sense of 'release', or self-forgiveness, or both. I don't know. I absolutely love it. :) x

Always Wandering (June creation #2)

NOTE: best listened to with headphones :). Hi nateives!!!! I've written another song! Honestly, been having so much fun with this one over the last few days. Also been fighting with some of the lyrics, so so much. Still not 100% sure it's the final piece...but it's definitely close enough to share with all of you beautiful people! This song came of its own accord...it's simply about the journeying we're all going through in this life. Life is in the experience of the journey, the destination is the least important part of it all. So, anyway, I was imagining an eagle flying high watching all these people wandering around. The eagle gets the big picture and can make observations based on that. Haha, oh my strange mind :D. I hope you enjoy this creation! The download link will soon be up for all Fresh Green Nateives and higher, so watch out for that one :). Hugs all around, thanks so much for all the assistance with choosing a title and an image to go with the song, yay! I took the photo on my dad's old film camera, a pentax k1000, while I was travelling in California a few years ago. This is a farm I spent a few months living in a tent on, helping out with harvesting veggies, reading, climbing trees, having deep conversations and swimming in the river. Happy days, I can't wait to go back! Love to you all! Nate LYRICS: Way down there See you walking in the woods Always wandering Searching for a place To rest your head My head's full of locations I imagine you have lain I'm always wandering Seeking for the signs I know you've seen What they mean... Seek and you shall find Life happens in its own time Seek and you shall find You know and I know So seek and you shall find Love happens in its own time Seek and you shall find You are always wandering I've seen some Imprisoned by old secrets They were keeping Blind to both the night and to the day What a shame Seek and you shall find Life happens in its own time Seek and you shall find You know and I know So seek and you shall find Love happens in its own time Seek and you shall find You are always wandering You who walk with courage Through the darkness and the light Always wandering Searching with a smile upon your face Life's embrace Seek and you shall find Life happens in its own time Seek and you shall find You know and I know So seek and you shall find Love happens in its own time Seek and you shall find You are always wandering

July Creation: Cover of 'Falling Slowly' by Glen Hansard

Dear friends As you know I broke my hand recently (good news it's healing well and I should be playing again in a few months), so it's kinda hard for me to write any new music at the moment! I decided on this video as this month's creation as it is one of the most special moments I've experienced in my musical life. Just before I broke my hand I began singing with my new friend Yana and a lovely person recorded us singing at this show. When we sing together it feels like puzzle pieces falling into place, like the calm after the storm, like waking up on my birthday morning, like cuddling in front of a fire when the rain is pounding the roof. Haha, ok, enough rambling, but she's a great friend and I'm honoured to sing with her is what I'm trying to say. Hope it's ok that I share this as this month's creation, and knowing you all as I do I'm sure you're gonna love it :) Big big biiiiiiiig hugs to all of you beautiful people. Love Nate PS: Please share this with all your friends on twitter, facebook, etc by clicking the share buttons :).

Elena fairly pointed out that I promised you all a poem while I can't play guitar and so, here is a poem I began some time ago and finished just moments ago. I hope it resonates with you, it's not a medium I'm used to and I have noooooo theory knowledge at all about how poems are meant to be structured, heh :). Enjoy, big hugs N PS: the photo I took while camping in the woods on an island in Canada in 2012. For some reason it felt like it fitted. The Gentle Ones: We learned to speak With broken tongues Until they formed Dancing shovels Our words dug deep Into history and memory Finding long forgotten Scattered shadow seeds We dug and dug and dug 'til dark saw light And the fight Became the flowerbed We watered with our Simple precious words Now we sing In holy disarray In the woods Our tongues grew Savour these fruits 'til skin splits ’twixt lips Built for serenading time And keep singing Because singing Is also called Love

Happy September! Here's creation #1 for this month!

Ok, I admit, I was so excited about this that I recorded it and put it up as a private youtube video a few days ago already;). Twa Corbies is is a medieval Scottish song which I've loved for many years, ever since a teacher at high school taught it to us on a hiking trip. We huddled around the camp-fire in the cool dark night, watching the flames dance on the breeze and singing harmonies to the stars. The song's content is pretty dark but I love it:D. it's about two crows discussing what to eat. One says to the other that he saw a knight who'd been killed recently and no one knew he was there. They talk about which bits they'll devour and how the wind will blow across the knight's bare bones for all time when they're done. It's sad, poetic and strangely romantic all at the same time. At least, I think so, but then I've always been attracted to the shadows as well as the light :). I recorded this in one take (hence the off-key mistakes) in a tall fire-escape stairwell in London, which gave it a lovely natural echo. I hope you enjoy and if you do then please like, comment and share:D. Thank you all for being my patrons, the fact that you choose to value my art in this way mean the world to me, both practically (paying rent and food) and emotionally (reminding me that what I do has inherent value and brings people joy and light), so THANK YOU! Warm magical hugs Nate PS: there's a new upvoting and downvoting comment section here on Patreon, so feel free to upvote the comments you love (no-one says mean things on my wall, so we don't need down-votes, yay) PPS: there will be a downloadable version of this coming up for all $5 and up patrons, so watch out for that one soon soon :)

J Nate, this is just simply beautiful. Easily in my top 3 of your creations on Patreon thus far. The acoustics of the stairwell allow your tone to resonate with just the right balance. Most of your songs are very clearly written from a first-person perspective and I love the vulnerability of that. This though, this was like watching an actor take on a character that is so far from their persona but still deliver the role in such a believable way. I'm waiting in anticipation for the download, my friend. Much love!

A new song and video, creation #1 for October!

Hi lovely Nateives! I am in the process of writing a new song. It's basically done, but will grow and mature with time I'm sure. Thanks so much to 'Fully Grown Nateive' Jen Butler for the name 'Beyond The Reach', I love it!! I'm in North California now. Having a beautiful time but also some big challenges. My old back issues have been flaring up, which means I'm in a lot of pain and it's affecting my enjoyment of my days. Feeling unsure of where I should be or what I should be doing. Time will tell. 'One World' (John Martyn cover) - October Creation #1

My dearest friends, I am very proud of this beautiful video my son Dave Koehorst made for this song. It couldn't have captured the mood any better and it totally shows off his amazing creative talent. Dave shot most of the footage near to our home in Jalon, Spain, and then we did the final takes in front of his TV yesterday before he put it all together. I stumbled onto this magical John Martyn song last week and I totally fell in love with it. I posted the recording yesterday, as the Weekly Free Download, so just let me know if you want me to send you an mp3 or wav file. And yes, I am using an auto tune effect. Guilty as charged. I had done a couple of vocal takes and I wanted to see whether I could tweak one particular note in an otherwise good vocal take. Then when I heard the effect on the vocal, it took on a life of its own and became part of the creative process. Your comments are always welcome, and if you love the video as much as I do, please consider sharing it so others might enjoy it too. :-) Be well! Markus K

Colin Edwards I like the spontaneous feel brought out by the video editing. Brief glimpses of the musician setting up, putting on his glasses before starting, these fragments showing genuine gestures, moments of vulnerability perhaps. These allow us to look beneath the skin of an otherwise well rehearsed and polished performance.

Nick Stonier Really like it markus, sort of blew me away, nice personable touches on the video by Dave which I thought makes this unique , not seen you play that guitar before is it a newy ?

Markus K I am glad you like it. I know it is a little different and that it might take a little to get used to it. The guitar is Dave's, a gift from his granddad. I didn't take my guitar this time.

You Struggle Through - November Creation #1

Dearest Friends, First of all, I want to send you a huge "THANK YOU!" for your support. I just received the pledges from October and it is really wonderful to feel your encouragement. I am just about to make our usual donation to the David Lynch Foundation and that makes me feel great too. You are the best! So, let's get to business: Here is our first video creation for November. I hope you like it because we had great fun shooting it. We found this place at the beach north of Denia, and it was just crying out to be used. Dave had this idea of using a dolly, which we didn't have, so we tried using our bicycle, which had a flat tyre, so he had to abandon that and just pretend to be a dolly himself. The bicycle made its way into the video however. Interesting fact: I was originally meant to have 7 costume changes, until I realised I don't own that many clothes. These are my best ones. Keep on sending those pledges! :-)

Colin Edwards Ha... this is the antithesis of the modern music video. The walk sums up the song title I guess, like each step is a bit of an effort, then we get this moment of brisk action, striking the window bars and tossing the stick aside with an I don't care gesture. this video has style :o)

November 5, 2014 09:48:46 · Reply

Markus K The stick on the bars was Dave's idea, and then I had to throw the stick again about 10 times so he could catch the bounce. All before breakfast! ;-)
