Who am I and what am I doing?
I'm a writer, mother, human rights campaigner and doula on a mission to ensure that all women know they matter in pregnancy, birth and parenting.

I need your help to keep doing what I do best: banishing guilt, shame and judgement from pregnancy, birth and parenting preparation and insisting on inclusive, evidence-based and realistic conversations as well as supportive communities around those of us on the wonderful/difficult/bumpy/joy-filled/head scramble of a journey towards parenting.

The Basics

As a Patron you'll give me £5 a month to cover my time, expertise and coffee supply as I produce:

  • regular pregnancy, birth and parenting tips, resources and discussions accessed via instagram and my website
  • new writing on women's rights, parenting, pregnancy, birth and reproductive health on my website or other FREE platforms
  • a monthly (free, inclusive, online) "no guilt, no bullshit, no judgement" support and discussion group for the pregnancy, birth and motherhood/parenthood journey
  • and more useful stuff as the community grows

Why?

As a founder of Birthrights (the human rights in childbirth charity), author of three books, a journalist and a doula with nine years experience I believe we need more than media hysteria, rushed appointments with overstretched healthcare professionals and (if we're lucky) a book or antenatal course to navigate the hail storm of information, emotions and changes to come.

We need real support alongside open and honest conversation that prepares us for the huge shifts in our work lives, friendships, relationships, sex lives, sense of self and bodies. We need a community around us that doesn't judge, shame or scrutinise and offers compassion, a listening ear and a diversity of stories and experiences so that we can find ourselves represented within parenting and know we aren't alone.

I want to provide resources to fill this gap and offer them to everyone who needs them without charging a fee, putting my writing behind a pay wall or creating courses/groups and products that only a privileged few can access or afford.

Many of us don't have spare cash for books or courses at a time when we're making less money and watching it leave our bank accounts at an alarming rate. And whether or not you can afford I know that what's out there often doesn't feel like it represents you, includes you or covers issues like mental health, money, work, sex and intersectional feminism in a way that you need it to.

I'm determined to change that and I need your support to do it.

What's in it for you?
I want to provide resources, tips, discussion, new writing and unbiased, no-judgement, virtual support groups to anyone who feels they'd benefit from them. If you need that, or want to gift making more support accessible to the next wave of mothers, then this is for you.

For £5 a month my Patrons will help me provide online resources for anyone who needs them. As our community grows I'll add more resources, starting with:

1.  When I reach 25 Patrons: weekly Instagram tips, videos and live chats, building on the inclusive approach in Your No Guilt Pregnancy Plan

2. When I reach 50 Patrons: weekly blogs and articles - some information giving, some critical and discursive responding to stories in the news as well as what YOU tell me you want me to write about.

3. When I reach 100 Patrons: free, online, monthly support group for anyone who needs to feel a no judgement team of peers around them at this transformational time in their lives.

The more Patrons support me the more I can do without levying a charge that might make it only for the privileged. In future I'd love to offer in-person groups, regular guest experts and speakers to my online feeds, guest writers, a regular newsletter and more.

Why don't I just do this for free?
I want to do everything for free and have a history of charitable work, but I still need to pay my bills and feed my kids. As a freelancer (and since the demise of The Pool) I've been forced to shift my work and writing on to things that don't benefit the parenting community at large. I'd like to find a way to get back to what I do best without putting myself last or devaluing my expertise and the importance of this work. That means I need to get paid.

Perhaps unusually, I'm not offering Patrons exclusive content and rewards - this is about inclusivity not exclusivity. You will get the the reward of providing something useful and accessible for anyone who needs it - including yourself. Your Patron contribution will allow me to dedicate more of my time and energy to creating this community of people ready to learn from each other, trying to banish guilt and sharing the experiences that matter to us. And as a Patron I'll want to hear from you so I can provide what you think will be most helpful to yourself and others.

Some nice things people have said about my book and approach to pregnancy, birth and motherhood/parenthood preparation :

"I wish there'd been a book like this when I was pregnant. It almost makes me want to have another child. Almost" (Bryony Gordon)

"This book is wonderful - beautifully written, warm and full of compassion and wisdom. I can't think of a panicky question I had thought of through either of my pregnancies (and I thought of them at a rate of five per second) that wouldn't have been answered by this book. I wish I had had it, in fact. A very empowering guide to becoming a mother. I loved it." (Robyn Wilder The Pool)

"Rebecca presents information, tips and suggestions about pregnancy, childbirth and the early days of motherhood in an accessible and honest way. Her approach is that every woman is unique and knows her own physical and emotional make up better than anyone else. She therefore avoids taking an ideological position on any issue and never uses words like must, allowed and can't. Instead women are supported to think through what they want and, even when life does not go to plan, to take control for themselves. This rights based approach is refreshing and hugely helpful for women." (Dame Cathy Warwick MSc RM, CEO of Royal College Midwives 2008-2017 and Chair British Pregnancy Advisory Service)

For £5 a month you'll help me bring my pregnancy, birth and new parent tips to a wide audience via my weekly Instagram stories. As I build an archive of tip for anyone to view, new parents will have access to a growing body of help, support and expertise that could be especially useful if they can't attend antenatal classes. As a Patron you can let me know what you'd like me to cover and I hope you'll feel pretty good about sponsoring this content for others to benefit from too.

You'll be able to read my latest writing on pregnancy, birth, parenting, women's rights and reproductive health. Thanks to your support I won't need to add pay wall or only explore the issues that mainstream media tells me you'll be interested in. In fact, I'll ask Patrons to let me know what subjects you'd like me to tackle and I'll make these my priority.

You could join monthly 'no guilt' support groups for pregnant women, people preparing for birth and mothers at any stage of the journey who need no judgement, a community, someone to listen to them and to feel heard and understood. Better still you'll know that your support is making these groups available for free for those who couldn't make a financial commitment themselves.

Goals
4 of 25 patrons
When I have 25 Patrons I'll share weekly, detailed pregnancy, birth and postnatal tips on my instagram stories for everyone to access. These will be based on my no guilt approach and I'll be sure to think about inclusivity, unbiased content and a supportive tone. I'll save these tips in my highlights so that the archive is accessible for anyone who needs it - especially those who might struggle to afford or find time to attend antenatal classes.
