How to make a Goat Cheese Salad - Dawn Be That Way

Just to prove to you all that I don't ONLY make sad music, here's a fun little cooking video! I feel like an important part of staying sane is making different sorts of art. I'm lucky that I have so many projects going on at the same time. Right at this moment Jack and I are working on a cover of Superstition. And I'll be releasing "Marshmallow World" with Ryan Lerman in December if all goes well. So yeah. Life is pretty great. And so is this salad. --------------------- In this episode of Dawn Be That Way, you'll learn how to make a Goat Cheese Salad. It's delicious and probably exactly what you've been craving if, like me, you just had three Thanksgiving dinners in two days. If you'd like to support my music and stuff, please go to patreon.com/natalydawn (It's how I make a living.) Dawn Be That Way Music and Editing by Nataly Dawn GOAT CHEESE SALAD RECIPE Cooking time: 30 min Serving size: 4 people Ingredients: 1 head butter leaf lettuce (do NOT use a bag of mixed greens) washed, dried and chopped 1 small shallot minced 1/2 lemon juiced 1 tbs red wine vinegar (do NOT use balsamic vinegar) 1 tbs olive oil 1 pear (I recommend Bosc or Bartlett, but you should ask your produce person what's best) sliced thinly lengthwise 1 persimmon (if it's in season. If not you can use an apple or whatever) sliced thinly lengthwise 2 avocados (1/2 avocado/person) pitted, peeled and chopped 3/4 cup slivered almonds 5 oz goat cheese 1 pack mini toasts or bread cut into 1.5 inch squares - 6 toasts per person honey salt and pepper Steps: 1 - Recognize that you are the reason why salads suck and that you can be a better salad maker. 2 - Pick great produce. 3 - Toast yer almonds. Put slivered almonds in a dry frying pan (not oiled) on medium/high heat for 5 min. Move them around every 30 seconds or so to keep them from burning. When almonds start looking toasty, drizzle them with honey, salt and pepper. Once caramelized, quickly transfer nuts to a bowl and refrigerate. Note: before serving, you will have to break the nuts up with a spoon because they will have solidified together in the fridge. 4 - Wash 'n chop stuff. 5 - Toast yer toasts. Line baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place toasts or bread pieces on foil. Top with dollop of goat cheese and a little bit of honey. Broil toasts on low for 1-2 minutes. 6 - Make vinaigrette. Combine shallot, lemon, red wine vinegar and olive oil in salad bowl. Salt and pepper to taste. Note: Do not use balsamic vinegar. 7 - Assemble salad. Start by coating the lettuce with vinaigrette. Then either make individual salads or throw everything into one bowl. Note: I don't recommend tossing the salad with the toppings because everything tends to fall to the bottom of the bowl. Instead you can season the salad with a bit of salt or lemon juice to give the toppings extra flavor. Also, don't forget the nuts in the fridge! 8 - Eat your salad. And congratulations on being a better salad maker.

Memphis Belle You're hilarious! These videos are fun! And a totally great way to continue to procrastinate from actually getting work done! Keep on!

Jacob Christ If you think saying nuts is fun, you should try having kids. It fantastic how often you get to say balls without people giving you funny looks. Big ball, little balls go get your balls, don't put your balls there. The list goes on and on.

Sorry for taking so long to get you guys a Holiday song! But I like to think of this more as a "winter song", since there's no mention of Christmas whatsoever (yay for loopholes!!!) So happy winter to you all, and may this season be filled with many oversized stuffed animals and oh so much chocolate syrup in your face.

I Could Lose - Acoustic Demo

So I recorded this song in the bathtub with the back of my parlor guitar pressed up against the tub to amplify the sound. This is definitely one of those songs that'll sound better on headphones than on a laptop.

Lyrics:

What are we doing here

My body it aches and toils

And my soul is restless for tomorrow

Wringin' out all my fear

Oh what are we waiting for

Don't you dare say it'll be easier tomorrow

I could lose everything

And I probably will

Everything but my faith in you

Countin' up all my Kings

Security can't be bought

It can only be bargained for tomorrow

And girl you ain't worth a thing

Except what your hand has caught

So don't you wait for it to be given to you tomorrow.

Frank Monaco I got the strangest feeling watching and hearing this. Not only are you done up a little like Marilyn Monroe, but the lyrics could very well have reflected her last thoughts. Okay, maybe I'm projecting too much into this, but I go there sometimes. Bottom line: I like it. Thumbs up (without accidentally plucking a guitar string - LOL)

Here's a little ol' fashioned folk song I wrote this week. Fun fact: I'm wearing those sunglasses because of an eye infection (gross.) Not because I'm too cool for school. Well, that too. But mainly my eye looks bad.

Hope you enjoy...

sara fosdick Nataly---the drama you have created with your songs, starting in January with 'waiting room' --yes--the drama is immense--it works to the point where quite a few people have been able to get through horrible lost love breakups just by listening to your words and music. You wrote us all an update along with the song 'haze' that i don't need to repeat here---and you've followed that plan in your writing to this final song. Which seems very final indeed. And you can read where people are so convinced by your performances that they are asking in comments--wait--what? What's going on? --to this song where we hear you say you are 'never coming back'. All these songs seem so deeply heart felt and convincing. They work. They work so brilliantly until now--with this final song you actually don't come back right away to answer your patron's praises. So now people wonder--not coming back to--oh no--or not coming back--maybe-- to US ? You have brilliantly followed out your plan. The songs this year will make an incredible 'side 1' for your album---and your patrons and followers on youtube are left in suspense. Is she gone? My god--tell us! And i have got to say--if you keep going the way you are--this album will have a heart pulse pounding louder than any poem by edgar allan poe. --leaving the question---where is there to go from being gone? i think we'll all stick around for 'side 2'

sara fosdick --these songs you have written project a lot of pain and loss. If the pain is as real as you write--i hope you have purged it by the actual writing of these songs. We all hope that, Nataly.

Nataly Dawn I don't know how much you actually purge with song writing. If the problem isn't dealt with in real life it doesn't really matter how much you sing about it.

So THANKS to Dave Retan (one of my patrons) for recommending that I cover a Kelly Clarkson tune! I took some liberties with this one. Hope you enjoy. And I'm still keeping all y'all's recommendations in mind for future covers, while I work on the new album :D

Nataly Dawn Thanks Kenneth. Jack likes to argue that the only difference between a Kelly Clarkson song and an Elliott Smith one is production. I think that's a bit of a stretch, but he scores a point on this one.

sara fosdick BTW i had an old chic band mate come from out of town yesterday and i was playing your solo work through my media room--no video--just the music. We talked a few minutes till she finally said--"Sara, Dude--Who is this incredible voice ?! Give me that thumb drive to drive back to austin with--i'll buy her album when i get home." She knew nothing of you or pomplamoose or patreon--so of course i educated her of your solo career. another BTW -- i heard you mention ART GARFUNKEL'S 'break away' album. I grew up on his harmonies thanks to my omniscient dad. Art has about 9 solo albums if you don't know---the best is 'watermark' --the entire album is full of songs written by JIMMY WEBB. But i am partial to 'breakaway' songs---'i only have eyes for you' and 'disney girls'. Dad is happy with full memory back now btw. If you don't know who Jimmy Webb is then you should do something about that !
