Dear Friends--
In these days, in the death throes of our culture and civilization, we are presented with a choice. Do we numb ourselves past the point of noticing? Do we drone on, buying, dulling, ignoring, anesthetizing, losing ourselves? Do we burn out? A final blaze of glory; a last goodbye?
Or do we remain present.
Do we hold ourselves to an unprecedented level of integrity and demand exceptional eloquence to witness ourselves, humanity, through whatever comes next?
I make pots that elicit some response; any response that confirms your aliveness. That appeal to humanity's sense of beauty. That challenge those same notions of beauty and perfection. I want to evoke the magic of heart-break.
I make-make-make pots that evoke depth; that remind me of a past life, only so that I might remember where I've come from and hopefully to some small degree remind me that I don't exist in a bubble, but as part of a vast community across space and time forward and back. That make me reach down, and back as far as I couldn't have possibly imagined and bring something of that place to you. To help you remember.
One of my teachers, Stephen Jenkinson, has been referred to as "a great rememberer". With these pots, which are often some ceremonial artifact, a censer, a bowl, a tea cup, and usually channeled in some way, I hope to do something along the lines of remembering. For both of us. And my not only duty, but greatest pleasure, is to share this with you.
Sincerily,
JGL
