Teenage Engineering PO-12 unveiling!!

I've been to Norbergfestivalen 2014. Teenage Engineering were there, showing their new drum machine, the PO-12. This is the first time the device has been played in public, and it was such a great opportunity to document this for you guys. Crazy little device, on a small circuit board :) Also, I've got a question for you. These kind of videos... Is this something you think it's OK to support me for through patreon? Perhaps especially those of you who support me with $10+ per video, does this feel right? To support these kinds of videos too? Like interviews, and media coverage? Please leave a comment with your thoughts on this. I'd appreciate it.

My first video with the Octatrack

The Octatrack is a flagship sampler from Elektron. I've been afraid of it, for such a long time. Thinking it's only for the truly professional geeks. But no.. It's an accessible sampler. You can start small, and use just some basic features and come a long, long way. I felt my mission was to find out whether or not this machine was cool for improvised live sampling or not. Bottom line is - it is freaking GREAT for live sampling! In this video I'm sampling, making some basic patterns, and manipulating some effects. That's about it really. That alone is very powerful. It's definitely a keeper! :) More Octatrack stuff to come. Cheers for now! CUCKOO

Analog Keys Sequencer Tutorial

Hey everyone, This has been a Cuckoo week. Here's another tutorial. This time for the Analog Keys' sequencer. And since its little brother, the Analog Four, is so similar, all techniques applies for that too. I've got many comments, and requests about the Elektron sequencer system. And so I decided to make a little walkthrough where we're taking it step by step, and ultimately end up with a song, played back in Song Mode. If anything, I hope this will help you understand the sequencer system, and get a feel for what it can do. Hit me up in the comments if there's anything you wanna share, ask, say etc. :) Cheers for now! CUCKOO

Mark Harris Great video... funny thing is I'm not even an elektron owner, but still enjoy these videos, as its good to see the process you go through in developing tracks, and also to see the Elektron workflow - both inspiring. Im learning a lot from watching how you use sequencers, and generally build up and develop your musical ideas. one question (not particular to this video), when you are searching for presets, or altering them... are you usually looking for something particular (i.e. something darker/less aggressive), or is it more 'wandering thru' until you hear something you think 'fits'. I guess, really, its do you tend to have a clear idea where its going, or just go with the flow? (or both :))

Nebulophone + Octatrack jam

A friendly soul sent me the Nebulophone from Bleeplabs. A circuitboard style, Arduino based, little synth, with a full, yet bleepy sound. I've played it and recorded it on the Octatrack, and then processing the sounds there - playing a little jam. The Nebulophone is a fun little synth, although it has its natural limits. There's more to it though, like IR sync, for syncing up several Nebulophones. And I think you can modify it too, if you know how to program an Arduino. I got a nice first impression of the Nebulophone. :) PS. This video post is visible to all, but there's an audio-only post, only visible to my Patrons, where you can download the source audio.

Building a tune live on stage

Hi Cookies and friends, This weekend, the good people at Folque in Skien/ Norway, invited me to do a little Elektron workshop, and play a small gig. I decided to go all improvised during the gig, for better or worse - ha ha. Here's one of the tunes I improvised on the spot. When doing this live you have one shot. I felt I had to stay really sharp, and pay attention not to drag things out too long. While on stage, for me, all the little things that went wrong, all the mishits, sloppy timing, all searching etc. felt like it dragged on for hours, disrupting the performance. I needed to quickly move on to keep the song alive. I wasn't particularily prepared, but I know the Keys really well, the Rytm pretty well, and am a total noob with the Octatrack. Knowing the instruments is essential in an improv situation, because you don't wanna bore people to death :) There are some comments in the video, illustrating my thinking throughout the tune. In retrospect, I wish I had prepared the Octatrack to do much more diverse things with the master mix. I also wish I had prepared a lot of kits with creative performance, and scene modes on both the Keys and the Rytm - to make things more dynamic. It's a bit tedious to create scene and performances on the fly. Always look forward. Always think about what you can do better, and how. But also, always think about what was fun in the process. Perfection can kill many aspects of the joyfull process and energy. Ultimately I'd like there to be a ballance between the spontanious and the perfect. Cheers for the support everyone! I'm so, very grateful for what you give me through Patreon! Every penny counts, and with your help, CUCKOO is not a minus project anymore. It's seriously very helpful. And I can't express my gratitude enough. T-H-A-N-K___Y-O-U! CUCKOO

Continuum Fingerboard - Demo #1

Hello everyone! Have I told you that I got a new synth, just before the holidays? It's a breed of its own. The Continuum Fingerboard, by Haken Audio. It's amazing. So here's a video where I hope I can get give you a feel for how it plays and behaves. It's so sensitive! This is definitely a worthy addition to the synth scene as a whole. It's differenting itself by its powerful, complex matrix synth engine - that makes it sound like nothing else, and by it's gentle, highly responsive tactile touch neoprene surface. Enough talk. Press play! And hit me up with comments or questions if you feel like. I like comments :) Cheers CUCKOO

Rob PT You are going to do some crazy stuff with this I can imagine. How much into the learning curve are you already? 5%? 10%? I already hear great conceptual ideas eeeeeeking it's way out without any mastery of this thing so I imagine it's going to become more massive and outstanding with more time using this instrument with it's beautiful sound design...

January 5, 2015 19:27:25 · Reply

CUCKOO It's massive! It'll take time learning to play it really well. I feel I'm perhaps 10% into playing it well. Anyone with a keyboard/ piano background will have an advantage. Anyone with cello skills will will probably have a big advantage too, since the concept of pitch is similar. But the EaganMatrix, the heart of the synth, I know about 0.1% of, ha ha. It'll take a lot of time understanding it. I think first I'm gonna focus on playing it really well. The presets are awesome, and they will last for a loooong time.

Continuum Elektrons

After getting the Continuum Fingerboard I was very curious of how it sounds with other synths, because it sounds so different! How does it mix? I finally got around to make a little tune with my Continuum and the Analog Keys and Rytm - just to see how they sound together. And I like it! I think the Continuum adds something truly unique to the sound. This is definitely something I will explore further. To play a melody on the Continuum to the sound of a synth with keys, I need to stay focused to stay in tune. Some sounds are so sensitive that they require hours of practise. And other sounds are easier to play. Download the song right here, or over at Soundcloud if you wanna keep it. PS. I'm also working on an Analog Keys/ Four patch pack. Some of them you can hear in this tune. Almost all of the patches are designed to be nice and responsive for keyboardists. But of course they can be sequenced on the four as well. There are about 40 patches. I'm thinking of releasing them as two versions. One where they are mixed as solo instruments, with full and body sounds. And another version, or perhaps a series of kits, where they are designed to have a specific role in the mix, cutting away frequences, adding frequencies to fit better together. More soon. Cheers CUCKOO

CUCKOO Thanks mate! That's really nice of you to say.. I always think I'm having trouble separating sounds from each other, and getting lost in the mix. But I guess I'm my own worst critic.

February 21, 2015 15:01:31 · Reply

Mark Harris nice sounds :) do you always play with 'rounding' off ... thats quite a challenge. on my soundplane I tend to use note quantisation, I can cope with it off for monophonic lines, but I find it really hard to play chords with it off. I love the sound of the continuum, its got this 'natural feel' to it, really helped by the fantastic Eagen Matrix.

February 21, 2015 14:14:31 · Reply

CUCKOO Hey thanks! Yeah the sounds on the Continuum are one of a kind. It's truly special. Most of the time I'm playing with rounding turned off. It's difficult, but it's where I feel the potential lies. It's where I want to improve. With percussive sounds though, I mostly turn rounding on. But as you're saying, it's really difficult to play clean with rounding off. I need loud and clear monitoring, with no latency, to adjust really fast - and when playing in a mix like this, it's really difficult. And especially when playing with other tuned instruments, like any well tempered keyboard, it's a tough test to pass :) I think it works best when there aren't too many tracks. Like just 2-3 tracks.

Foot Pedals for Analog Keys, Softstep 2, Tutorial.

Hey, I've been thinking about this for a long time, and finally I just went ahead and did it. Foot Pedals for the Analog Keys is just begging to be explored! Many keyboard players, myself included, at least want a sustain pedal sometimes. And one really versatile foot pedal board is the Softstep 2, by Keith McMillen. It can be configured to send all sorts of MIDI. In this tutorial I'm going through how to pair the two, and create a set of foot pedals to do sustain and modulations. The rest is up to you. What I failed to mention in the tutorial is that I boosted the sensitivity of the Softstep, which I found to be much more natural especially when you're sitting down. Perhaps when standing, you want it to be less sensitive? I'm not sure. Anyways. I hope someone will find this helpful! Cheers! /CUCKOO

BASTL Instruments Modular "Rumburak" is a beauty!

BASTL Instruments have been really busy this year, creating a lot of modular synthesizer modules. This setup they're calling "Rumburak", a Check Republic folklore magician :) In this video Vatslav from BASTL is telling us about Rumburak and the different modules, what's digital, what's analog, how their assemblyline is more like a collective than a traditional factory amongst other things. BASTL is a really interesting symthesizer developer, with a voice of their own, always crafting things that are truly unique. Just look at the way they solved sub-notes in their step sequencer. Brilliant yet super simple. Once seen, you gotta wonder why this isn't a standard seen in all step sequencers. I hope you enjoy this video! More coming! PS. I'm having wifi trouble here at Musikmesse. It just doesn't work.. I'll try to find a more reliable wifi somewhere and upload the rest of the videos.

Jamming out a tune on the fly

Hello Patron friends!

Thank you all newcomers for joining in the last couple of weeks! Deeply thankful! All the small donations add up, you know! It's really helpful. So thank you!

Here's a little jam using the Analog Keys and the Analog Rytm to jam out a tune, and make a live performance. I'm gonna play on a sort of conference tomorrow. I'm afraid it's not gonna be covered by any media, so I thought I'd share some of my preparations, at least :)

My thought with live improvs is to prepare a few great kits in advance. Kits that I know really well. Full of Performance Mode changes and Joystick action. Since I'm very much a melody guy, I need to focus a lot on the keyboard, not making full potential of the Rytm. But just muting and unmuting the Rytm tracks is very helpful in making things move a bit :)

If there are any questions about how i set this up, or anything, don't hesitate to ask right here, ok.

Cheers for now.

Josh Murray A great jam!! I love the synth sound along with the rhythm from about 6:20 - REALLY got my toes tapping!

CUCKOO Thank YOU Josh! As always with melodic improvs, it's a bit difficult to always stay on top, but I think it gradually got better and better, and I think from 6:20 and on I was finally getting there :)

Analog Keys Multi Map Tutorial

The Analog Keys' keyboard can be split up into zones where you can play different sounds in each zones. One zone can be used for an internal sound, another zone could be playing an external synth, and a third zone could be playing an internal drum kit etc. A lot of people have asked how to set this up, so here, finally, I'm trying to break it down into (hopefully) easy to grasp steps.

I'm sure you can use it more creatively than what I'm doing here. But these are the basics. I hope you'll make use of it, if you've got an Analog Keys, or an Analog Four. It is possible on the Analog Four as well. You just have to find the menu in there first ;-)

OK, cheers for now!

Rozzle Brilliant Cuckoo! Multi Map works perfectly on the AnalogFOUR with an external MIDI keyboard as well. For those with A4 and external controller, simply set the Performance Channel to match the channel of your external keyboard, and it works like a charm (Global > MIDI CONFIG > MIDI Channels > Perf Channel). Since the A4 doesn't have the AK's dedicated "MultiMap" on/off button, the best way to turn off multi map on the A4 is to change the Perf Channel setting back to a MIDI channel you're not using (e.g. 8).

CUCKOO Yes, thanks mate! Great! This is very useful info for Analog Four users!

Olle Andersson Thanks Cuckoo! I am an AK user and I find it somewhat confusing with all the concepts of kits, projects, sounds, patterns etc. I guess it has its own logic but I dont see it yet :) So I would love a video on how you simply go about making a song from scratch and how you think about things like sounds, kits, projects and where to save this and that, where to start and so on. Of course this can be done in a dozen of ways but I think you know what I mean. Would be much appreciated. Thanx again!

CUCKOO Thank Olle! I know, it can be a bit overwhelming, and confusing at times how it's all glued together. I'll keep it in mind for future videos!

Studio jam with drummer Hans Hulbækmo!

This weekend I booked a day in Propeller Music Division here in Oslo, together with incredible drummer Hans Hulbækmo. I've always had this feeling that there's some interesting ground in synthesizers and acoustic drums yet to explore.

I was playing on the Analog Keys as a master, and I set up an Analog Rytm to act as an always in sync click track, and then the Continuum Fingerboard, with its unusually rich sound palette.

Mostly I set the tone first with a sound, perhaps a bass. Sometimes Hulbækmo started grooving before me, and then it was easy to tap sync the Analog Keys and jump right in. It was a truly interesting, and less chaotic than expected, experience. Definitely something I want to explore further.

I just recorded this one little peace on video. I think it's a nice example of what we were doing. For the next time though I think I'll try to prepare a little more, and perhaps rehearse a few times, and explore dynamics a little more. It's easy to end up in high energy land when jamming, but sometimes keeping it sparse and quiet can be really powerful.

I hope this can serve as inspiration for some of you. It was a really kick ass experience for me!

cheers

PS. I have absolutely no experience in mixing drums, so this is more or less the levels straight from the raw recordings, with some minor adjustments. Mixing multi track recorded drums I think I have to give to a professional mixing engineer for now :)

CUCKOO He he, thanks! Yeah it's an all different synthesizer than everything else on the planet, and this is just one tiny patch of its big, rich sound palette.

CUCKOO Thanks man! I've got 1:50 hours of audio recordings ;-) I might release something to listen to. It's all improv. And I think editing it a little bit will make it nicer to listen to. But the main reason I recorded it was both to try playing with Hans, and to record lots of drums that I can chop up, and use for future Cuckoo music. But the jams turned out so nice so I might consider releasing some tracks as well.
