For over 20 years now, I have traveled the United States in search of historic abandoned buildings to study, and for much of that time, I have made an earnest effort to document these buildings, and to learn as much as possible about their place in the tapestry of our collective history.  Now many of the buildings are gone.  Over 100 asylum buildings I've visited have been demolished or burned down, along with many other hotels, industrial sites, residences, commercial properties, churches, synagogues, sanatoriums, schools, hospitals, and military installations - you name it.

Currently, I am primarily paying my bills through print sales through my SmugMug print server, as well as sales of articles and editorial content to both print and web publications, and occasional speaking fees.  That doesn't leave a lot of extra money for non-essentials, and yet I'd like very much to get back to writing long, well-researched articles on the sites I visit on my blog, The Kingston Lounge, as well as to add a side-blog with updates, shorter articles, additional photos, and personal updates, to be titled "The Kingston Lounge Annex".

As this is a project with no direct funding - no grant money, no particular entity behind it - I am free to be as experimental as I want, and bend to nobody's editorial will in the content in my work.  However, I also have to come up with gas money, and hotel money when it's too cold to sleep in the buildings I'm photographing.  I need time to travel to archives in search of historical information, and to scan negatives - I have taken tens of thousands of photographs in these places; a tiny, tiny portion of those are finished and online!

And that's where you come in, dear Patrons.  Your support will allow me the time and money to continue this work - to continue to make site visits and learn about the places I'm photographing; to gas up my car, eat, and sleep whilst away on trips; to scan negatives, collate historical data, and write essays on these places before they're gone from the collective consciousness.  And that's exactly what I intend to do.  Because these places are important.  And because, whether they are bulldozed, burned down, or simply fall in upon themselves, they won't be around for long.

Public credit and occasional desktop-sized images, as above.  But more importantly: Access to my Patrons-only blog here, which will contain many shorter-forms essays that are not publicly posted to The Kingston Lounge Annex.  Many of these will be more personal in nature: what happened when I decided to visit the new Department of Homeland Security headquarters - ironically located in an abandoned asylum - without their knowledge?  Which historic sanatorium did I discover at the heart of an active naval base?  What was it like photographing a burning building, from inside the building?  How did I learn to use the pre-dawn light of the Blue Hour to get some of my best shots?  Plus, as with all levels: the good feeling you get from supporting an independent artist!

Due to lack of time and ancient computer equipment, it's been a couple of years since I posted a photoessay on the Baggage and Dormitory Building on Ellis Island.  I would like to complete the followup essay, a much larger piece with over 40 photographs and substantial historical analysis of the South Side of the island - 2/3 of the square footage of Ellis Island Immigration Station, devoted to the turn-of-the-century Quarantine Hospital.  This pledge amount should be enough to get it done!
