The Doubleclicks: Where Are You? In a Pizza Roll TARDIS? AGAIN!?

Hello friends!

Thank you for still being here, Patrons! I know it's been a long time since we've accessed this page, but we are really thankful that it is here! After a summer of releasing our album and touring, we are back home and we are in the works on new songs and covers and videos.

"We've heard that before!" say the more cynical of you. You sure have! Here's a thing that happened: we were planning to release our President Snakes Animated Video as a Patreon-funded video, but because that was part of our album, which was funded by our Kickstarter, we felt like it would feel weird to charge you for that video, even though we did previously tell you we were going to do that. So we didn't. We did post it, though, and it's on YouTube!

What other things have we done instead of making Patreon videos? Well, a pizza rolls video, of course! That video (see the top of this message) was part of a collaboration with Nerdist. You can see all about that collaboration in a nice behind-the-scenes video they made in conjunction. Of course you aren't being charged for that video, since that was a commercial commission.

It's fall now, and fall is the Doubleclicks time of songwriting and videomaking and independent creativity. We'll be here posting videos this fall—hopefully the first one will be up in the next week! Thanks for being around for us when we need you! I hope you will like the videos we put out!

School of Movies: Jaws

School of Movies: Jaws is now up on YouTube.

The first of an ongoing series of movie education videos we'll be putting out every Monday.

First Question: What does the adaptation of Jaws teach us about the importance of likeable characters?

For this we look at the differences in character action between the 1975 movie and the source novel by Peter Benchley and how their onscreen personas inform on what happens to them in a movie featuring a giant, character-devouring shark.

Question of the Week: What makes a character likeable for you, to the point where you’re actively rooting for their survival?

Or, to give the movie its more accurate title: My Name Doesn't Matter: Here's Furiosa Being Awesome.

Anders This is a great movie. I was surprised you didn't comment on the Biblical imagery though - water from the rock, ritual anointing of warriors for the Holy One, leading people out of slavery, the Pharao's army coming after them with their chariots, searching for the Holy Land, etc. This is a much much better Exodus movie than the Exodus movie. Now, for the ridiculousness: a) Petrol is scarce, which makes it a display of power and wealth to drive these gas-guzzlers. It is the same thing that makes people buy a watch for $280,000 - it's a way of saying "Look how rich and powerful I am". And since gasoline apparently spoils after 6-12 months, there's no use in stockpiling it anyway. b) Presumably the Immortan Joe turns on the water once per day and the people have to gather it up then. c) Breast milk... well, it's richly symbolic. Joe provides them with mother's milk, he is their mother as well as their father. Presumably they eat other stuff as well. There was a Celtic ritual of patronage in the 6th century where the client had to suck on the patron's hairy man-nipple. Same symbolism.

Jason Youngberg Yes. We need more videos about the history of the other civilizations outside of "the West". I hope you include explanations about their culture and how it's different than ours. (Remember that "different" doesn't mean better or worse.)

Fredegar Deepdelver Love Extra History to death, but where is the Patreon or Milestone goal for more Extra Credits? Or is it not feasible to write more, or longer episodes of that, even if you get a bunch of artists? I had the impression that up until now, the art was the main bottleneck.

Extra Credits We would need to clone ourselves another James. I believe science is hard at work on that, but until the breakthrough, Extra Credits will be on a regular weekly schedule. That being said, we are looking into expanding the Patreon for the rest of our shows. We just don't want to bite off too much at once, or rush into it unless we're sure we can do cool things!

Lars Händler I am from Germany and graduated high school (better the equivalent we have here) with focus on German history. Your video is very well researched and does a perfect job to describe the complex geo-political situation prior to WW1. The only thing that stings me is the flag you use for Germany. The black, red and gold flag for Germany was adopted after WW2.

September 2, 2014 10:22:51 · Reply

Extra Credits Yeah, we realized that error after the video had already been released, and wish we could go back in time to change it. Our writer was preparing for a convention during the last week of production for this episode, so he didn't get a chance to give this the final fact-check. Hopefully future episodes will see these sorts of errors ironed out!

September 2, 2014 23:15:38 · Reply

Lars Händler It is not a grave error but the black, red, yellow flag symbolizes the federal republic or modern post WW2 Germany. Germans tend to be a bit touchy about this because the German Reich of the late 19th until mid 20th century is not exactly something we are proud of.

Tomer Michael I love the sandwich story as much as the next guy, but if I'm not mistaken, it actually traces back to a Portuguese fiction novel from 2001... http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/gavrilo-princips-sandwich-79480741/

Michael Waisfeld I find it quite funny watching this as while living in Israel. Quite literally living with the consequences of the war (like I can literally see the separation wall ((amusingly originally a British idea)) from the Palestinian authority as I'm writing this). Definitely the single most pointless war ever fought by human kind.
