About
Reina Cottier- abstract artist based in Tairua. NZ
Born and raised in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Spent most of my life in Auckland, holidaying in Tairua (at the beach) at the family property since I was 13, and finally made the permanent move there in December 2013.
I am a mother of 2 awesome girls who keep me real in every way…. I rediscovered my passion for creating beautiful shapes and colours about 5 years ago, after I had kids which opened up a whole new side to me, (which I didn’t think possible for this multi aspected gemini! lol!), so I decided to experiment with painting, a media I hadn’t explored in depth (I did art all through school winning many awards but gave it up for a career in hairdressing). I discovered that I cant plan or think when I create, it just flows and what it will be… will be.
I am heavily influenced by sun, surf, nature, culture & all things vibrant. I also create a range of Wordart which satisfies my insatiable need to use words to express my inner world, as well as colour and shape.
Right from the start I was drawn to, even obsessed with, painting themes strongly associated with different cultures, particularly Maori & Pacifica, along with sun, surf, nature. I found the koru/spiral*, was a prominent feature that emerged in almost all my paintings whether I consciously put it there or not. It became my feature symbol in most of my artworks, along with strong ‘ocean’ themes, which evolved into oceanic creatures, especially since moving to Tairua.
*(The koru -Maori for "loop") is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattoosThe circular shape of the koru helps to convey the idea of perpetual movement while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin.)
I have been described as prolific. I have at least 6-8 paintings on the go at once, finishing at least 2 a week. My art is constantly evolving along with myself, I am forever stretching myself, taking risks, trying new themes and techniques. I paint at least 5 days a week and love each and every minute of it.
My main priority in life?…..being as authentic to myself as i possibly can. I love my mix in life and wouldn’t change a thing

Apart from helping to fund paints, tools & canvas's, I am also starting to produce and fund my own prints and cards of my latest wordart , see below for pic, this has become very popular and I am going to produce other merchandise with this (and other Wordart images) on them. The main thing I need straight away is a decent camera, so I can produce very high resolution pics of all my artworks for merchandise like duvet covers, curtains, fabric, flooor mats etc. I also want to start offering demo & eduactional vids on how I produce my art. Also skype coaching, on Reina style art, I have already had alot of requests from people wanting to learn about my process & techniques. I would love to have the resourses to do this.
