We are fortunate to be in the age of the independent artist... It used to be, for an artist to be successful, not only financially but in terms of having your work seen, you had to be the beneficiary of a patron (well here we are), or more importantly the decisions of larger corporate entities... in the case of comics, the large syndicates. While a few good ones manage to keep their integrity in their art and content, most (in my opinion) get watered down into what the corporate bosses consider "safe" and "sale-able." Has anyone seen the state of the comics page today?
The vision and style of Mortimer is very different. This is a comic-strip for the people :) For me it represents a freedom and empowerment, and inspiration, to follow your calling, whatever it is; to go beyond just existing, paying the bills and working your 9-5... to live your life and to have, even in some small way, a positive impact on others...
That said, the artistic vision behind Mortimer includes a few main themes to look out for. Communicating and satirizing many of the ideas of high art - philosophy, culture, politics, science, music, etc... through the most basic form of low art, the comic strip...
The strip is character-centric. Mortimer, the protagonist, and Sara, the foil, or straight man. Their interaction provides for infinite content...
Mortimer was resurrected over 3 years ago, with the goal of publishing, no matter what, at least 1 strip per week, until a sufficient body of work had been established to offer in a collection. The next goal was publication of a book of collected strips. That goal was realized in the form of Rise of the Anti-Cartoon, self published through Amazon CreateSpace.
The next goal is where I need your help... and that is to take Mortimer to the next level of building an audience. I believe the best way to do this is to be able to take it out directly to people through events, conventions, etc... where I can meet fans in person, and promote the strip through printed materials such as signed prints, books, etc.
It will also be fun to keep you updated on progress as we grow this together, and to see how far it can go... Thanks for your support.
