We're making a secular (non-religious) documentary about Jesus and early Christianity, current working title "The Gospel According To History" - it's going to be a fun, entertaining look at the story as historians understand it - not theologians. We're going for a vibe similar to The Daily Show combined with The Big Short and a Michael Moore documentary. We'll be chatting with New Testament academics from around the world, both believers and nonbelievers, to get a balanced view on what the actual historical story is, as best as they've been able to put it together using modern methodologies.

The writer and host of the film is me, Cameron Reilly, best known for groundbreaking long-form historical podcast series on Napoleon, Alexander, Julius and Augustus Caesar and the Cold War. My podcasts have been downloaded millions of times over the last decade and, even though I'm a stone-cold atheist, this period of early Christianity has been a fascination of mine for 20 years. What actually happened? How did a fringe, Jewish personality cult from the backwaters of the Roman empire end up becoming so influential in Western civilisation? That's the question we want to answer.

My partners in the production, Torsten Hoffman and Sam Toy, both have many years experience producing, directing and distributing films, including Torsten's BitCoin documentary which became a viral hit in 2015 and won four international awards.

We have already raised funds, both privately and via Kickstarter, to get us started, but we're still operating on the smell of an oily rag, and more budget would enable us to interview more academics in different parts of the world and use a combination of animation and dramatic reconstructions (or Margot Robbie in a bubble bath) to break up the academics and help us tell this story. You're contribution will go towards us making this film as amazingly entertaining as we can.

Academic Fever. New Testament scholars are scattered in universities around the world and we really would like to meet as many of them as we can in person to hear their version of the Christianity story. This means travel expenses for Cameron and hiring a local camera crew in each location. If we hit this budget, we will be able to afford to send him to more places, which means more content.
