About

When I was 10, my best friend Stephanie handed me a *huge* floral print notebook. I would spend the next year or so scribbling fantastical stories about princesses and sorcerer's, until the notebook brimmed with tales of dancing and espionage.

When I was 16, I was diagnosed with depression.  I had had my active imagination hijacked by constant messages at home that I was not good enough...not even good and by reading fundamentalist books about replacing healthy self esteem with a version of humility that took on the proportions of character assassination.

I was a resilient kid, though, and in college I continued writing relentlessly.  I was enthusiastically welcomed into the ranks of the student journalists before being faced with the grim reality that journalism as we knew it was dead and being told by critical voices that there was no such thing as a writing career.

Yet my penchant for language and lyricism got me through a period in my life where I fought for my very survival day in and day out.  Headphones on, I drowned out the naysayers with lyrical rock ballads and soothing folk songs.  I started a career in technical copywriting that opened doors. My writing took shape in both technical savvy and ardent musicality in turns.

"Catch Your Dreams" is the name of the notebook I bought myself at ink fragrant Half Price Bookstore in Berkeley.  It was the first intentional return to the creative writing I did in the notebook my friend bought me in elementary school.

It is a story about finding strength in the written word, finding melody in my lines, finding empowerment in my craft, and independence in my resilience. I'm not ashamed to say, it is in part a flowering of reading Rupi Kaur and Courtney Peppernell's whose courageous truth-finding in trauma and dark places is unfortunately overshadowed by their Instagram fame.  My writing is also a navigating of dark places and searching for truth in unlikely places: for instance a kava lounge- and finding healing through shared rhythm of feeling.

I hope you find it as a place of enjoyment, challenge for growth, and healing.

Sincerely yours,
Sara Grimes
