I've been writing seriously now for 30 years (see treborhealey.com). In that time, I've published consistently and always made writing my priority. This has led to publishing 5 of my own poetry chapbooks back when I was starting out in San Francisco, and then continued as I found publishers for my three novels, a book of poetry and a short story collection (a second will be coming out this fall), as well as co-editing two anthologies. I've published with 8 different publishers and more than 25 if you count all the anthologies I've been in. I'm grateful for that, even if the majority have been small presses, which though I think generally support and publish the best work, do not have the economies of scale that lead to monetary success in the US of A. But critical success they can boast, and I have been fortunate enough to receive 4 literary awards for my work (a Lambda Literary Foundation Midcareer novelist award in 2014, the Publishing Triangle Ferro-Grumley Fiction award twice in 2004 and 2013, and the Violet Quill award in 2004), and been awarded a writing residency at the Morris Graves Foundation in 2004.  Because I put writing first, I left San Francisco when the dotcom boom drove up rents and the writing scene began to feel restrictive. I went to Los Angeles, which was cheap in the 90s and well into the 2000s. That is no longer true and I am once again moving on as I cannot afford to stay here and write. That's OK as I'm a wanderer at heart as anyone who has read my books knows :) I've traveled extensively in Latin America, both because it's cheap, because I'm a longtime student of Spanish, and because I find it enormously interesting, inspiring and supportive in the larger non-monetary holistic sense of that. Thus I've decideded to move to Mexico City, because it will allow me to continue to write in an affordable and inspiring city and pursue my interests, one of which is serving refugee children and street children, both of whom I have worked with and will continue to do work with. I think I will end up writing about this in some way as well, either by collecting together work for an anthology as I did for Queer & Catholic and Beyond Defintion: New Writing from Gay and Lesbian San Francisco, or by writing a novel based on the courageous and poignant stories of many of these children. I'm also interested in bringing voice to the gay, lesbian, bi and trans experience in Mexico and am connecting to artists in Mexico City with that goal in mind. I'm putting together a way to make a living now, just as I did in San Francisco and Los Angeles. I only need to come up with half the income I need to live on here in the U.S., so that is encouraging on one level but challenging on another as in order to do so, I need to come up with income from the U.S. via online activities such as editing, grantwriting, research, etc. (wages in Mexico, as many of you know, are dismally low). I'm about halfway there, but need help with the other half and that's where I hope Patreon can help. I can only say I am the real thing and I will produce work and make a positive impact on my community here and among the children and gay folk of Mexico. I am a good investment as I'm a generous spirit with a drive to write and to connect with others who need encouragement and help in speaking out. I hope you will join me. Thank you for your consideration.

$90 of $5,000 per creation
I'm working with a Mexican-American visual artist in Mexico City on putting together events with American expats and Mexicans exploring the cross-cultural conversation between the two cultures. We want to put together happenings that include readings, theater and art exhibits exploring this topic on a monthly basis. We already have venues and participants lined up, we just need $ to rent space, serve refreshments, offer stipends to artists/writers and a little $ for our time putting it together
