Jennifer Murphy Neat game! Some feedback- the black text over the dark grey art in this episode is unreadable for me as-is, but can be highlighted as a workaround.

New Washington Character Creator Prototype

http://inurashii.xyz/new-washington.html

I've been meaning for ages to create a twine-based character creator for the Age of Corporations, my fiction universe. I've already got a skeletal ruleset for tabletop games, but this release represents my first attempt to create an automated means of creating characters.

This is an early effort and is only for Secondary School New Washingtonians, but expect more updates coming up! Please don't hesitate to create lots of characters and send them to me! :D

Geoff Lamb Hi, quick boring tester feedback for the next update after doing a first run through. The description of the Orc sub race has a sentence in there that's a stub (People of). Some choices can be backed out (e.g. subrace) but others can't (e.g. I clicked firearms by mistake instead of melee and had no way to go back). Don;t know if twine can do anything about the second part though without making it needlessly complicated for very little gain.

Sabe Fun! Have you ever considered deploying these things as Web apps that can save to a database? That would let people return to their creations, and make it much easier to send them to you as suggested at the end there.

The Fate Codex - Volume 2, Issue 4 (August 2015)

Hello Patrons!

We're at GenCon in Indianapolis this week, but The Fate Codex marches on! Be on the lookout for your new issue by August 15th via the Patreon messaging system.

Thanks for your support!

This month's issue features:

  • An essay from Travis Scott, Under The Hood, that explores the role of Skills in Fate Core, teaching you new ways to use the Skills your players choose at character creation.
  • An essay from Tara Zuber, a Fate Codex veteran, called Fate Flashbacks that explores how to use flashbacks in your Fate game.
  • ANOTHER essay from Mike Olson on creating stunts, Stunts Are Cool, that covers stunts from top to bottom.
  • A new Quick Start from Jon Peacock called Family Matters in which ghosts compete to elevate their chosen scion to the family throne.

Thanks, as always, to our usual staff (Thomas Deeny, Amanda Valentine, and Shelley Harlan) that make the Codex possible. And don't forget that The Fate Codex Anthology: Year One is now up for sale via the Magpie Games webstore:

Mark Diaz Truman Hey Chris! It is a bit confusing. Here's how it works: - We post a preview on the last day of the month. Everyone who pledged during that month is charged. - By the 15th of that next month, we release the issue via Patreon message. This issue went out a bit late, in the middle of August. It looks like you pledged for the September issue. You'll get that in the next week! If you want this issue, you'll have to buy it directly through DTRPG.

It's a beautiful day, and all I want is to hear the story of how my people came to be!

Root-mother won't give the story up for free, though; she's going to send me through bog and taiga, from the old well to the mouth of the desert, all to fetch ingredients for my tonic-brewing lessons.

All I wanted was a story! Being apprentice root-mother is hard!

A Hindren's Guide to Qud

My first September release is a bit unusual -- it's a work of fanfiction! And a video game FAQ! And a dynamic fiction game! It's all three!

Those of you who know me personally or follow my twitter account know that I have been powerfully obsessed with a roguelike called Caves of Qud, a post-apocalyptic game of exploration inspired by the 1970s 'Gamma World' roleplaying game. You can buy the fancy Early Access version of Qud on Steam for $10, but you can also play the older ASCII version for free:

http://freeholdgames.com/?page_id=39

The game is complex and beautiful, and it has a rich lore to it. In order to help me get started in the game, I created a 'race' of deer-centaur mutants that I played as constantly, naming them the 'Hindren'. As I talked about them more, the programmer and designer of the game seemed amused, and the designer even discussed writing the Hindren into the game's canon lore!

I also have a lot of friends who are having trouble getting started in their Caves of Qud experience. As a classic roguelike, Qud is lethal and unforgiving, requiring keen instinct and care as well as an ability to adapt to the unexpected.

I decided to dovetail the solutions to both of these issues... by writing a twine game set in Qud! In it, you play as a young Hindren wandering into Qud for the first time. I hope that those of you who have no desire to learn how to play CoQ will still enjoy the story! :)

Download the attached html file, or play the game here:

Bloom Episode 5

Hello wonderful pledge friends!

It's been a little while since I've gotten to work with the inimitable Kiva Bay, but I'm happy to report that that's all changing! Kiva did the art for the latest keenly-anticipated episode of Bloom, which is today's release and the last-minute second release for September! As usual, you can play it here:

http://inurashii.xyz/bloom/

In addition, I'm providing code and support for Kiva's latest project, '12hrs'. It's a game about a homeless woman trying to occupy herself safely during the 12 hours between a student union closing and reopening in the morning. It's a harsh look on how our society treats indigent people, and I'm proud to be working on it.

I'll be posting the finished game here on Patreon when it's done, but in the meantime, you can play the work-in-progress on itch.io:

http://kivabay.itch.io/12hrs

There's also a chance that the game will be available on Steam, if it gets greenlighted! Of course, radical right-wing political ideologues are giving her a hard time for putting it on greenlight, so if you have a Steam account, please go vote for it:

The Fate Codex - Volume 2, Issue 6 (October 2015)

Hello Patrons!

It's time for our annual... HALLOWEEN ISSUE! This year, we're focused on psychological horror, the creeping dread that plagues us when the lights are off and no one is home...

This issue features:

  • An essay from Richard Bellingham building on the tips for horror in the Fate System Toolkit, Sustaining Dread.
  • An essay from Sarah Richardson, Feminine Horror, about including common horror tropes involving the female experience in your Fate games.
  • A systems piece from Brendan Conway, Damaged Aspects, that replaces stress, social and physical, with aspects that degrade and change with tiem.
  • A new Quick Start from yours truly, Nostradamus, in which a terrifying serial killer plagues 70s era Seattle.

Thanks to our usual staff (Thomas Deeny, Amanda Valentine, etc) that make the Codex possible every month! And thank you for all your support!
