S&L Podcast - #196 - Would Vegetarians Eat Electric Meat?

http://swordandlaser.com/home/2014/11/11/sl-podcast-196-would-vegetarians-eat-electric-meat We have some awesome World Fantasy winners to talk about, some exciting casting news for The Magicians and The Expanse, but it really gets interesting when our “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” check-in turns into an ethics of meat-eating discussion.

S&L Podcast - #198 - The Most Hated Phrases in SciFi

http://swordandlaser.com/home/2014/12/9/sl-podcast-198-the-most-hated-phrases-in-scifi This week we're busy. We congratulate the winners of several year-end awards. We kick off our December book pick, The Night Circus, a beautiful novel by Erin Morgenstern. And we dive into some of the most wretched and hated terms and phrases in the professions of authorship. Mary Sue is under siege!

Daniel R Harlow I may have to check "The Night Circus," I'm intrigued. Big ups on the beer choice! I'd always check whenever I'd head out for dinner or drinks. "You got any Red Trolley?" "We have Red Hook.." "...Meh.." -Then I'd usually grab a Sammy, because that's what us Boston guys from Rhode Island do. So I'm bouncing back and forth between Atwoods "MaddAddam" and "Justice" by Jennifer Harlow. Because, why read one book when you can read two? Before them, I finished "The Slow Regard of Silent Things" -I loved it. Whoever didn't fall in love with Auri back in her debut is as heartless as a SoCal self gratifying arrogant ass. I've met some Auri's in my life, I'm glad Rothfuss didn't give us the painful details of what led her down there. I was planning on starting De Camp's "The Ancient Engineers" after the two I'm reading now, because someone handed it off to me and I'm into that sort of thing as well; then again, it might go on hold so I can try out some Morgenstern. Someone also turned me onto Nathaniel Philbrik's "In the Heart of the Sea" over Thanksgiving. I'm thinking about diving through it before they produce the adaptation film. It was described to me as either being inspired by Moby Dick, or is more closely to the actual tale of Moby Dick than Moby Dick was? I don't recall, it's something like that. I just remember having flashes of him saying, "So, it's like the Mobiest of Dicks!" while envisioning throwing a big fish into a cherry red convertible sports car. But that's me. During your lovely episode, I was drinking Crystal Light Fruit punch. Back in Florida it was one of my go to mixers for flavored Vodka, though I don't do the alcohol thing anymore. Thanks for the cast, enjoyed it much.

So much good news! Some of our favorite stories are becoming movies and TV shows and we even have good news of a popular indie author getting picked up by Tor. And we even make a stab at predicting the Nebula winner. Yet controversy rages in the Untheileneise court. Especially about how to pronounced Untheileneise.

We give our last thoughts on The Goblin Emperor, kick of our April pick, Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett and discuss why some author names are bigger than their titles. But what really gets this episode going is the debate about whether a reader has the right to "clean up" an author's language.
