About Culture Art Society (CAS)

Hi!

Thank you for making it here! We understand that some of you are not familiar with us, but want to support so here goes an introduction.
Culture Art Society (𝗖𝗔𝗦) is an interdisciplinary research platform that intersects critical studies and art theory to research the cultural economy of African archives. Unbound by disciplinary specificities our research pursues the ways in which the archive effects, informs and can reinform liberatory practices. Our work is committed to African cultural activism and arts education; thus, we combine literature, cinema and visual arts to form a critical curatorial praxis of memory work, which we draw on for programming and projects.

Accessibility, circumventing hierarchies of cultural canons, as well as general distribution, are integral to our philosophy, so we are always working towards making resources on African cultures accessible to everyone, particularly African people and people of African descent. Currently, this includes our ongoing African cinema + diaspora film list with over 150 films listed with free screening links. We are compiling an African literature list to compliment our free reading group program once it is back and running in both London and Copenhagen (we will confirm locations in the near future).
Our website is under construction and taking much longer than anticipated. However, when completed we will look forward to sharing plans/projects to welcome collaborations with individuals, cultural institutions, collectives etc, who share our values and philosophy. In the meantime follow us on Instagram for regular archival research and narratives from the African continent as well as its wider diaspora.
So if you are enjoying our work, how about becoming a CAS Patron that supports educational African cultural activism?

Warmly,
𝗖𝗔𝗦 Team
