Great Show!

Taylor, you really rocked the house tonight at Yoshi's in San Francisco. I was so happy to be able to make it. My wife LOVED it also and you've definitely got another fan now :) I also LOVED your new original. The number of time changes and musical-style shifts was astonishing and really showed off your talent. Since you asked for suggestions for a title, the one phrase that kept going through my head while listening to it was "Amazing Journey" as the song just made me think of someone journeying through life with triumphs and sadness and everything in between. The incredible variety of styles in this song just naturally lends itself to the idea of a journey, though. Just my opinion, though, so feel free to ignore :) I think the playset was great overall, though I have a couple suggestions (which you should feel free to ignore as they're just my opinions) 1) Save the one that people are most interested in hearing for last. In my opinion, one of the most popular songs you've done is your Skyrim/Morrowind cover. So many people know that song and love it (including me) and it's upbeat enough for a show finisher. In fact, I would even suggest saving it for the encore. 2) People expect an encore. Have something ready :) 3) Add the Game of Thrones song to your play set. While maybe not the one that shows off your skill the best, it is a very popular song and one I'm pretty sure people want to hear. I know I did. Anyway, a huge congratulations to you for a really great show. My wife and I REALLY enjoyed it. Finally, I have some requests for future songs. I don't know if you ever played the Might and Magic series (esp. 6-8), but they really had some of the best video game music ever. A few from MM7 might be worth looking at for you: 1) Dwarven Barrows (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_6Ym4l3Hg0) (collaborate with Lara for the piano part?) yes, I know part of it is cello/flute/clarinet/etc, but I suspect you could make it sound good with a violin too :) 2) Celeste (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXFAa019sIg) (collaborate with Peter Hollens for something AMAZING) 3) Erathia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Anoc67QPMaQ) I'm not sure how well these could be arranged for violin, but then I'm not the talented one around here :)

Theron Miles I think Lee made some great points here. You really did do a fantastic job, -especially- considering it was your first show. Seeing how humble you were in front of everyone I think really helped cement you in everyone's mind as a great performer. Also taking the time to meet like 95% of the crowd afterwards was a very special touch I'm sure fans will remember.

Taylor Davis Thanks Lee, glad you enjoyed the show :) And I appreciate the suggestions! For me it just felt really hard to predict what people would get the most excited about because I have so many different songs out and such a diverse audience, so I just decided to go with a lot of my more popular videos, my personal favorites, and songs that sell well on my albums. My Zelda album has sold quite a bit better than any of my others so I figured that is what most people would be excited about. I chose to use Bolero as an ender since it's my most difficult piece and I think it's very exciting, and I hadn't shown that video yet so I thought people might be excited about that, but of course not everyone will be as excited about it I guess haha! I thought about doing Game of Thrones but my arrangement is not really suited for a live show since it's completely unaccompanied for half of the song, so trying to get the exact timing for the backtrack in the middle of the song would have been really hard for Jarred (he was really nervous about running the show as it was and since he doesn't actually play an instrument it would have been tough for him to remember when to time in the entry of the backtrack!) but if I do more of these and want to include that in the future I'll just have to redo the arrangement so I can use it for a live show! Haha the encore was definitely my bad though, I just didn't want to jinx myself into thinking people would actually want an encore so I just didn't even think about it! Honestly I really had no idea what to expect, I've never done anything like this and I didn't even know if people were going to be clapping between songs haha! I still have no management or help outside my friends/family (and all of them work their own full time jobs and took time off to help me do this) so none of us had any experience with this. I'll know for next time though, it's all a learning experience though and I'm very glad you guys were there to share in it with me!

Lee Wilson The only reason I suggested Skyrim is the sheer number of views on YouTube compared to your other videos (Skyrim = 5 million+, closest otherwise is He's a Pirate at ~3 million). I have no data on album sales, etc. so obviously you are a better judge of what's your popular music. I was simply suggesting saving the most popular (whatever that may be) for last, that's all :) I did like Bolero, actually, and I understand your reasoning. It's a tough call, but here's a point you may not realize - only people who are really skilled in the violin can tell if something is your most technically brilliant or not ;) To the rest of us, it all pretty much sounds equally amazing from a technical viewpoint, so all we can judge on is if we actually like the song or not. When I was a young programmer, I used to spend a lot of time tweaking and rewriting code to make it the most elegant it could be. I would show off these little programming gems to fellow programmers and they'd ooh and ahh appropriately. When my manager asked why I was taking so long to do some code, I answered with engineer babble about refactoring and trying to get better efficiency and all that. He agreed that these were important things, but then asked "does it work as is?". "Well, of course it does", I replied. "Then check it in and move on to the next task", he said, which frustrated me immensely. Then he gave me a little gem of knowledge that has helped me greatly over the years. He said (and I paraphrase): Only other programmers are ever going to see or understand your code. The end user only cares about how fun the game is - not how technically brilliant the code behind it is. Yes, you are amazingly skilled in playing the violin and I think we all admire how talented you are. For me, though, I care more about which songs you choose to play and how well I like them. The fact that you play them brilliantly makes the songs even better, but I don't have enough skill to judge the technical merits. I just know 1) it sounds great, 2) I like the song. Looking at your YouTube most popular is actually interesting in itself to me - your top 5 are all of songs that people LOVE anyway. Not terribly surprising, really, but it does suggest that people listen to songs they like - if the artist playing them is brilliant, that's a great bonus, but I suspect that even the most brilliant and technically flawless performance will still flop if people don't actually like the choice of song :) ALL of your songs are ones that I like, but I'll be honest - I like some more than others :) As for the Game of Thrones, yeah, I can understand (and agree with) your reasoning behind not playing it. I was just kind of excited about the new season and the song was on my mind. No big deal. Anyway, please don't think that I'm criticizing you in any way, Taylor. I think what you're doing is tremendously difficult and scary and I admire you for doing it, especially with a notoriously harsh audience like Youtube. All I'm trying to do is help with the best advice I know of - it's your job to accept or reject it :) In any case, I'm proud to help support you, and even more so after I saw you live (in fact, I more than doubled my pledge after that show!) Keep on playing them wicked tunes :)

Lee Wilson Well, so much for formatting in that block o' text. Sorry about that. No idea how to make it pay attention to line breaks to make readable paragraphs. :/

Ed Murray I am glad your first performance as a main attraction was a very positive experience for you. You seemed to keep the nerves under control very well and settled into your smiling and passionate violin playing quickly. I feel fortunate to live only 2 hours away in Sacramento to have been able to witness your very first concert! I am sure the New York fans will be just as warm and accepting of you as the group in San Francisco. You earned and deserved the ovations you received at the end of your show. I also sent an e-mail to Yoshi's thanking the club manager for booking you and hope that they'll be willing to have you there again if you decide to come back to Northern California. All the best to you (and your technical crew) at the New York show and look forward to see what wondrous melodies you have in store for us Davisians in the future!

Taylor Davis Wow thanks so much for that Ed, that's so nice and I really appreciate it :) I definitely hope that I have the chance to do another SF show again in the future too! :D

About Me

#2 - I found you through a cover you did for Skyrim (one of my favorite games). I was blown away by your talent and loved the fact that you were covering gaming music - an under-recognized genre! I also have a vocalist background and am in awe at your range and what you can do with your voice. #3 - I program computer games for a living. It's my passion and very definitely what gets me up in the mornings. Knowing that the work I do gives literally millions of people joy in their day is really motivating for me. Currently, I'm a developer on Second Life, but have also worked on many Sims games in the past. #4 - Make more gaming/fantasy music covers. There's so much good music out there in that genre! Everything you've done blows me away and I just want to see more :)

Peter Hollens Hey Lee! I'm so glad you found me!! What kind of vocal background do you have? I'm planning on bringing more gaming stuff this year! I've finished a new Portal tune, and I'm working on the Civ theme, and I Just finished a new LOTR tune, so I think you will be very pleased coming up soon! Please let me know if there are any opportunities with any games you are working on! I've been working with gaming composers a lot lately, with some new console games, an indie game called Banner Saga by grammy nominated composer Austin Wintory and I'm just loving it as I ADORE video games, and ADORE sims! ;) heeheh, anyway hope to hear more from ya!

Lee Wilson Not really much of a vocals background, more of a lifelong hobby. I did a lot of solos in Jazz choir in junior and senior HS, was a backup singer for a local Portland rock band for about 3 weeks right out of high school (before realizing I had no time to pursue that if I wanted to get my CS degree), but that's about it. Really, I just like vocals and singing - when I hear music, that's what registers with me. I'm really glad to hear that you'll be doing more gaming/geeky music - I think it definitely appeals to your fanbase judging by the comments I see here :) I will certainly let you know of any opportunities I come across with games. Second Life doesn't really do any content (we rely solely on users for that) and there never really was much singing in the Sims games (at least not like the stuff you do!), but ... it's a small industry and connections invariably happen, so I'll keep an eye out. Just keep on making the great music and good things will happen for you (as I think they already are, judging by how fast your "money per video" is rising :)

Lee Wilson Hey, speaking of collaborations, have you ever thought of working on something with Malukah? She's my other favorite singer I associate with Skyrim :) If you haven't seen her vids, I highly recommend them!
