Phil McPeake Owen Staton, the new master of the Jedi Mind trick... After giving the "free" to download demo a go over the weekend, I just dropped "COUGH" (i.e. many) of our fine British pounds on www.guildball.com

Andy Rucker Just finished this episode! It was great to hear about how Adepticon went. I'm really bummed that I missed the show this year. @Russ: I've been really enjoying the Starships app myself. I can see why they made it tablet-only; there is a lot of info being presented once screen that could very well overwhelm a phone's screen! I definitely agree with what you were saying WRT the simplified nature of the game; I think it's probably about right for a tablet game; I'd be disappointed if Inhad bought it for the PC.

Ken Squires Squad size and Mechanics sound like advance version of DUST.

The D6 Generation I know right!?! That's why I like it. BTW Jon is a BIG fan of Dust Warfare...so that doesn't surprise me at all.

Ray Greenley So I'm a bit behind and haven't listened to Ep 166 yet, but I was wondering if Craig could give his feelings of SW: Armada vs. Sails of Glory. Armada sounds great, but I have a huge soft spot in my heart for the age of sail time period. Related: I've been waiting to hear of Craig getting SoG back to the table. Guess it's a tough one to get out. If I were close by, I'd love to play it!

The D6 Generation Well, Ray, I'd have to say the two games are almost entirely different. SoG is much more about managing your ships down to a very fine degree, and Armada is much more a fleet game. Definitely two different games with plenty of room in the collection for both. :) I've been trying to get SoG to the table, but my schedule's been tough, and the few times it might have made it, something else has taken precedence. I have it still, and WILL get it back to the table someday, but it might take a while ... ~Craig

Andy Rucker The IP discussion was quite interesting...I can appreciate the challenges of dealing with both established and new universes. Not sure which one I would like to work on, if ever given the choice! The Survive! Space Attack! game sounds awesome...that one is firmly on my radar. The review of X-Com was interesting, too...though I have to admit, from the sound of it it doesn't sound like the game for me. Part of it is that I'm just not invested in the IP (see how I tied back to the first part of the show? ;) ). I would definitely try it if given the opportunity, but I'm not going to be running out to buy it anytime soon. Overall, another Not Too Horrible show guys!

Ian Arvizo Just for the sake of argument if one was to be in the Boston area this week, which Myriad do you guys go to? Not trying to be stalkery or anything...

Andy Rucker It's the one in Manchester, NH. Probably about an hour from Boston.

The D6 Generation Ah, Damn, Ian, that sucks! We're not really gaming at Myriad a lot lately for some reason. We've been frequenting a local bar that's basically given us a big back room for free, staffed full bar, and great fast bar menu ... Adding drinking to the gaming has had a salutary effect on my win/loss average, since I don't tend to drink too much. :) It would have been great to be able to play a game, though! So close, and yet so far! Russ is bailing on me yet again, but I'll be playing the new fantasy skirmish hotness tonight, Frostgrave ... a rental car shouldn't cost more than a few $100s ... just sayin'. :) ~Craig

The D6 Generation David & Duncan, fair enough...What mini's game did you guys start with?
August 5, 2015 09:33:26 · Reply
David Blood I played D&D (and Traveller, Gamma World, Top Secret, etc) back in the 80's as a kid. I still have some minis from back them with horrible paint jobs from my 12 year old self. Then a long time away. I got back into the hobby in 2013 - I bought a few games but never played them. The first minis games I played on a regular basis were Dreadball and SAGA. Those 2 games helped me find a regular group. Then came Deadzone, Kings of War, and Pulp Alley. Those are my top 5 played games by far.

Duncan Allen The first minis games for me were based on RPGs as well. Striker for out Traveller game and a set of rules for D&D miniatures that came after Chainmail but (I think) just before the AD&D rules came out. To be honest there were a lot of empty bases in those games as we didn't really have the money for a lot of figs (or the interest to paint them at the time). When I did get interested in painting and collecting it was mainly historical (WWII ground and Naval mostly). I have cobbled together a Frostgrave army from my old D&D minis (which, like David's, are pretty badly painted) and some Romans, Koreans and ancient Welsh. I have some pictures on my blog http://intermittentre.blogspot.ca/2015/08/frostgrave-first-game-and-some-thoughts.html My current project is to do a Hail Caesar game where the Romans will be attacked in a Dark Forest by German Tribesmen with beastmen and undead

Andy Rucker Hey guys! Great job on the episode, as usual. I have to say, listening in on the discussion was a lot of fun, and I appreciated getting a feel for WM/H and the status of that game. The thing is...I think Warmachine/Hordes has to be the best supported, most balanced game...that I have little to no interest in playing. Just doesn't grab me for some reason. That being said, I figure I would probably play if it was THE game that whatever local group I end up playing with is in to :).

David Blood So, interested in Guildball, I put the rules and 2 6-man teams in my cart over at guildball.com. $194 !!! That's even before shipping from the UK. Is there a USA website I can buy these from, for maybe a little cheaper than $79 for a 6 man team? (Because that seems a little crazy.)

Duncan Allen The price made me reconsider as well, they are nice figures and it sounds like a really fun game but it is a lot of money for something that is likely to be played only once in a while

The D6 Generation The cost isn't cheap, I'm afraid. Muse on Minis now carries them in the US: http://museonstore.com/collections/guild-ball So shipping, at least, shouldn't be a killer. And it's a very low model count game, but yeah, even at the MoM store, you're looking at $35 for a 3 mini starter, and then anywhere from $12 to $35 (for the giant 50mm based mini). Despite that, though, it's really picking up steam locally, with most guys using British eBay auctions to get teams for anywhere from $50-$70. The MoM news broke today, ironically enough, just after the last British auction ended either yesterday or Monday ... :) ~Craig

CinemaShredder Whoever said that video games are not an important part of our culture has clearly never witnessed the creativity that such games inspire in videos like this!
