First off, thanks for your interest and for even reading this.
My name is Ian Matchett, I'm an oil painter and student organizer living and working in Detroit MI. Most of my work focuses on the connections and continuities between a revolutionary movements of the past and present.
My official artist statement runs something like this:
With my paintings I try to explore the connections between radical movements and individuals of the past and present. When the past is forgotten, or remembered only as a distorted caricature, our ability to unify and act in the present is crippled. If we seek to radically change society, we must break the monopoly exercised by the powerful over history. I hope that my work can contribute to this process.Mainly I try to focus on humanizing past leaders and movements, making them more approachable and less saintlike, while also highlighting amazing leaders of the present.
I love oil painting, the human form, and communism- all of which tends to come out in my work.
Unfortunately the ven-diagram of "wealthy people who buy paintings" and "people who support radical politics"doesn't always match up too well. With this in mind- I've decided to reach out to the internet/crowdsourcing/you and ask for a little help :)
donate what you can- I'll share my process, thoughts, and ideas!
