When The Whale Call...Who Will Answer?

The Whale Dreamer is a 2 book series that uses the mechanism of a fictional story about a young girl called to by the whales to surface the dream of the future to engage young adult audiences with environmental stewardship.
Kelley is The Anthribian, there is only one on the planet at a time; she is unique in that she is a citizen of both the land, and the ocean. On land she is known as the Doorway to Death, a vortex of sorts that animals that are going extinct must pass through as they leave the planet. But in the ocean she is known as The Key to The Garden of Life, for it is only she who can surface something the whales have been protecting since the beginning… the dream of our future.

This magical realism tale takes readers on a journey into the oceanic realms as it faces the 6th mass extinction, the state of the oceans, and a planet out of balance. And while this book takes on challenging topics, the story is woven with the threads of love for what is here.

While the book provides a story to fuel reader’s excitement and passion for our planet and the animals that live here, the engagement campaign provides the tools and techniques to take positive action toward the future they most want to see.

It isn’t about the power of one anymore,
it is about the power of the collective coming together that will achieve the changes we need in the world.

"Leah lives in story, it resonates in her being – as a teller, as a writer/thinker, as an activist/world changer, as a contemporary artist rooted in the ancient. She knows the alchemy of myth and the miracle of life, and the tangible magic of language performed." -Joe Lambert, Founder, Center for Digital Storytelling

A few years ago I moved to hawaii so I could give my full attention to finishing this book. And I did. I finished it, I created an audio copy of it. I delivered it to my kickstarter community and to my agent. The agent had several readers look at it, and they all agreed, it is a totally unique concept (no, it is not a remake of Whale Rider) and it shows great promise, but I need to make some major fixes to the story. (More about that for patreons).

So I'm back at it, finishing this story while at the same time developing and testing the engagement pathway for land stewardship and ocean protection.

I'll let the video above speak for me regarding what all is involved in the engagement campaign.

If you made it this far down....Wow. Thank you.

For not only getting involved with helping a great story come into the world. But also for supporting the development of an engagement campaign to help engage and support young people to get involved with environmental stewardship.

What drives me to create is the opportunity to bring you closer...closer to understanding yourself, your place in the world, closer to your community, closer to examining your role in the great story of our time.

My Backstory:
I was conceived in Africa.
Ok, not that far back!
Story has been an obsession for as long as I can remember. I started off in high school, skipped college and went straight to NYC to study professionally. I had a rare opportunity to study with some of this country's greatest teachers while a wee little thing as I interned at summer stock and worked for a season off-Broadway.
But living that dream wasn't satiating.
Speaking other people's words didn't do it for me.
And I had a driving passion for environmental and social justice issues.
I ended up going to college and studying wilderness & environmental education, worked as a wilderness guide with youth at risk off and on for 6 years, and received a masters in social work.

But the call of the soul took over as I recovered from a run-in with thyroid cancer and faced the possibility of losing my voice during the surgery. When the operation was complete, and my voice was intact, I didn't need to be hit over the head with the metaphor. I started a nonprofit called The Performance Initiative, we were dedicated to utilizing the arts for social change and did performances that addressed war and voting, and that is what led me to San Francisco, where I ended up working on a pet voting project of Al Gore's at Current TV. It catapulted me into the online social media realm where I have been playing ever since, and got me into filmmaking, and provided me the opportunity to fulfill another dream, which was to produce and host The Green Channel at Current TV. I have continued to work in the media, and have written for magazines such as Fast Company, National Geographic News Watch, Spirituality & Health Magazine, Huffington Post and more.

Last year this time, I was working at the UN Climate Talks in Paris. It was a life changer (I write more about it in the first post). I have always worked great life affirming jobs while creating on the side. And then this year something in me just snapped. The call of the soul was to go ALL IN. The commitment to address environmental and social issues through storytelling stronger than ever combined with a deep desire to give the most potent gift and genius I have to offer this wild universe of ours my full attention.

One of my life lessons...is that I can't do it all on my own.
The time has come to ask for your support.
To ask for your partnership.
And to ask for your allyship.

Here is a short film I made with the assistance of The Baum Foundation and was part of the My Planet series. (All about people healing in the presence of the natural world).

WHEN YOU BECOME A PATRON YOU MAKE EPIC POSSIBLE:

You amplify: Your funds make it possible to hire a great team...a story editor, an engagement consultant on the book side of things, a director of online engagement,  will cover the costs of our amazing ACTION KIT, and pay teachers for the time when they use their classrooms as a test case.

You provide some grace: The brain is but so big. When the bills are paid I can give my full attention to this initiative. This much I know is true: when writing a big story, you need to have a little bit of space to let ideas bang around. That means it's just that much harder when you're juggling a bunch of consulting gigs.

We get to co-create: I get great pleasure out of making this a meaningful experience for you. Want creativity exercises? More stories? Information about other creatives? Patrons get to direct the kind of content I provide.

Still want to know more about what kinds of things I create?
Here is a little taste of some of what has been created in the past few years and still produce:

In Living Landscapes: A traveling storytelling tour that puts people in relationship with the natural world while listening to both true and fictional stories.

Soul Stories & Soul Story Circles: This is a form of mystical storytelling where I read the person and create a mythical story about their hero’s journey. This work is done with individuals and with groups and online.

Story Ceremonies: These are magic, a place where we come together and marry the art forms of storytelling and the act of creating a sacred space where transformation can happen. Dragon Love, a story of initiation, was told around a fire and under the redwoods, The Story of Mary Magdalene, a reclaiming of the story of Sleeping Beauty, and She Rises, were all told for the first time this past fall.

Short Stories: The Forest Walker, Dragon Love, The Day I Married a Polar Bear. All wild mythic stories that speak to what it is to deal with love in our modern day world.

Workshops: Myth, Magic & Medicine , Change Your Story, Change Your Life:

“I feel liberated, I feel strong, I feel creative, I feel everything I wished for when I was little, is now possible, through that story. But it had to be here first. This [story] was a reflection of my life…and hearing this story just opened up this place of hope… I brought if from what was just my experience-- and now I am opening it up to the experience of the earth-- ” ~ participant from the first showing of She Rises.

Inspiration is the name of the game, and I thread every story, every event, every newsletter, with the intention of inspiring you in one way or another.

So Patrons... weather you are jumping in for $1 or $10 or more... HUGE GRATITUDE. Prepare for #yum.

With love,
Leah
