Thanks very much indeed for checking out my Patreon page. I only discovered Patreon recently and realised that it could make an enormous difference to me and enable me to continue doing what I do best: writing and illustrating science / art books. Because I'm writer AND illustrator, these creations take a huge amount of time. For example, the book I'm working on at the moment - called Unnatural Selection - has taken five years solid work, all day, every day, seven days a week. It's scheduled for publication in 2018 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin's book on domesticated animals. (My previous book, The Unfeathered Bird, was only published after 25 years - though I spent many of those years working as a fine artist too).
A £2K publishers' advance doesn't go far spread over 5 years, and doesn't provide any of the funds I need for research trips to illustrate specimens in museums etc.
Doing what I do is a labour of love and, although I feel deeply grateful for every letter and e-mail I receive thanking and praising me for my work, spending so many years with scarcely any personal income does take its toll.

I care deeply about making science, and especially evolution, understandable to everyone. My way of doing this is to write in an engaging and accessible way, without using jargon, and to combine this with beautiful artwork. I give talks too.
I hope you'll consider supporting me; any regular contribution, no matter how small, will make a big difference, and you have my word that I'll take every opportunity to express my gratitude.
I'm working towards my March 2017 deadline at the moment, but will add to this profile once I have submitted it to the publisher and am on to the next leg of the current journey.
After 'Unnatural Selection' I have plans to produce an extended second edition of 'The Unfeathered Bird' with 100 extra pages and a bit more about feathered dinosaurs. This will be my way of thanking all the palaeo people who've shown me so much support.
But first I'm going to write a memoir about my life in the no-man's land between art and science.

I desperately need to install electricity and set up a freezer and preparation space in one of our sheds, including running a Dermestid beetle colony, and a tank for maceration.  The shed would need to be insulated and rat-proofed first. At the moment we're doing all the skeleton preparation for the books in our kitchen!
