Hi, I'm Cole Stangler and I'm a journalist.

Over the last five years, my reporting has brought me from the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC to the campaign trail with Bernie Sanders in Alabama and Jean Luc Mélenchon in northern France, from the oil fields of western North Dakota to picket lines in Granite City, Illinois and Brooklyn, New York. I’ve talked to fast food workers and bus drivers, steelworkers and farmworkers, rank-and-file trade unionists, environmentalists and political activists from across the United States and Europe. I think their stories are important. I want to keep telling them and I need your help to do so.

As I think everyone knows, it’s not easy to make a living as a writer these days. That’s why I’m turning to you, my readers. Journalism is my life’s passion and I want to be able to keep doing it.

So here's what I have in store for this next chapter: I’m going to stay based in Paris. From here, I'll be covering and closely following a number of stories across Europe that I think are pivotal for our democracies—for all of us, wherever we’re living: the rise of the far-right, in France, and elsewhere across the Continent; the crisis of social democracy and creeping attacks on the welfare state, the upcoming elections for European Parliament and the fate of the Left, from Jeremy Corbyn in the UK to Podemos in Spain and France Insoumise right here—and of course, what the labor movement’s up to. I’ll be doing reported stories, book reviews, opinion pieces, interviews and more.

Here's where you come in: subscribing at the basic level gets you access to my weekly newsletter. For subscribers at the next level, I'll be rolling out a bi-weekly audio interview series with activists, writers and thinkers doing valuable work. At the level above that, you'll have input over the guests appearing in the interview series. If I can earn enough in monthly contributions, I'll make it a weekly series instead. Try to think of pledging your support in a broader sense. You’re investing in a career, and you’re investing in independent journalism.
