About

Hi, I'm Cole Stangler and I'm a French-American journalist living in Paris. I tend to write about issues involving labor and global politics, with an increasing focus on France. My work has been published in outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Foreign Policy, The Nation, Jacobin, Dissent and VICE.

My reporting has brought me from the campaign trail with Bernie Sanders in Alabama to Jean-Luc Mélenchon in northern France, from the oil fields of western North Dakota to picket lines in suburban Paris and union halls in Istanbul. I’ve talked to fast food workers and bus drivers, nurses and janitors, steelworkers and farmworkers, rank-and-file trade unionists, environmentalists and political activists. I think their stories are important and I want to keep telling them, but I need your help to do so.

As I think everyone knows, it’s not easy to make a living as a writer these days. Freelance rates aren’t what they used to be and good journalism requires a lot of research and a lot of time—much of it unpaid. That’s why I’m asking for help from my readers.

With your support, I’ll be able to stay on top of the stories I’m following today: the crisis of social democracy and creeping attacks on the welfare state, the rise of the far-right in France and across Europe, the corporate onslaught against workers and the planet, and how people are fighting back against all of the above.

Subscribing at the basic level gets you access to my weekly newsletter. If you subscribe at the highest levels, I’ll write you a postcard every once in a while. (It's true! Ask around.) But what's really important to stress is that you can sign up with as little of a contribution as possible. Everything is appreciated.

Try to think of pledging your support in a broader sense. You’re investing in a career, and you’re investing in independent journalism.

$327.36 of $1,000 per month
At this level, I'll have the space to commit to long-term and in-depth investigative projects that are often too difficult to pursue.
