About Hong Kong Shark Foundation

Background/Mission
Hong Kong Shark Foundation (HKSF) is a registered Hong Kong charity started in 2008 dedicated exclusively to shark conservation. We aim to raise awareness about shark conservation, particularly the unsustainable practice of shark finning, and to reduce consumption of ALL shark products.

The Problem
Every year over 100 million sharks are caught worldwide for shark fins and other products, with over 50% of the world’s shark fin being traded through Hong Kong alone. As apex predators, sharks are a crucial part of the marine food chain. The demand for shark products has contributed to the rapid decline of many species, with several already nearing extinction. Removing sharks from our oceans will threaten the delicate balance of ecosystems that are valuable sources of food and key elements in regulating our climate. Oceans absorb carbon, generate oxygen and are essential to our survival on the planet. Where Do Your Donations Go?
HKSF believes we have a rare opportunity in Hong Kong to make a significant impact on a global scale and the key to our success is through our youth, individuals and companies like yours to help reduce the consumption of shark products in Hong Kong and save the world’s sharks. Your donations go to support such campaigns as:

The Solution: Active Campaigns
1. Education
HKSF created the Shark Ambassador Program which is a student-driven initiative that enables motivated students here in Hong Kong to become a vital part of the shark conservation movement. HKSF provides the mentoring, the training and basic materials to help new Ambassadors learn more about the importance of sustainability, as well as how to best engage their peers. Once Ambassadors have participated in training, they go out into their schools and communities hosting events, organizing fundraisers, and working with their teachers and HKSF to integrate conservation messages into the existing curriculum.

2019 and 2020 were challenging years in Hong Kong for everyone especially in Hong Kong with 8 months of pro-democracy protests and then the Covid-19 pandemic. However, thanks to donations from individual donors, HKSF was able to reach out through our Shark Ambassadors education program to over 10,800 students at over 45 schools. Your kind donation went to pay for some of the classes (USD200 per 1 hour lesson = 15 classes) that we taught and we have updated some of these school events on our website https://www.hksharkfoundation.org/education/ and on our social media in FB, IG, Weibo and LinkedIn.

2. Shark-Free Company
The HKSF Shark-Free Company program is designed to provide practical support to companies in the establishing and implementing of a shark-free policy. Our easy to follow, detailed HKSF Shark-Free Companies Implementation Pack contains all the tools you need to become a shark free company including our HKSF Shark-Free Companies Logo for your website and social media.

3. Shark-Free Wedding
HKSF's Shark Free Wedding campaign is a proven successful campaign that highlights local shark heroes who have chosen to have a "shark free wedding" and are thus HKSF's mini-ambassadors educating their family and friends on why it's not sustainable to eat shark fin soup.

Measuring Success - KPI's
The challenge for any animal conservation charity like HKSF has always been how to quantify the impact that donors make with their donations. Since our mission is to raise awareness about shark conservation we quantify our success by measuring:

* the number of students we talk
* the number of schools we go to
* how many schools have formally set up Shark Ambassador clubs
* the amount of social media success we have through our popular Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Weibo (China) accounts
* by how many schools and companies sign pledges to not each shark fin soup
* by the success of our public protest campaigns such as successfully getting companies like Maxim's, Cathay Pacific, DHL, UPS and other companies to stop selling or transporting shark products
* by raising awareness through the people who attend our events such as beach clean ups, public talks, community fairs, etc.
* annual newsletter - every year we produce a newsletter to update you on your "support journey". Check out our June 2019 newsletter and our June 2020 newsletter for more information.

2021 Strategy: Call To Action
Our strategy for 2021 is to continue to reach out to educate people not only in Hong Kong but to raise awareness globally about this shark crisis.  We want to encourage people and corporations get more involved and give back by sponsoring and funding our successful education campaigns like the Shark Ambassadors, Shark-Free Wedding and Shark-Free Company initiatives.

We encourage people in 2021 to be a part of the solution and say NO to shark fin soup and ALL shark products.  Please remember...when the buying stops, the killing stops TOO!

For the sharks, thank you!
