Hello friends, Americans, countrymen! I'm Azie Dungey, the creator of Ask a Slave, a youtube web series based on my time working as a character interpreter at George Washington's Mount Vernon, where I dressed up like an 18th Century houseslave to educate the public about early American history. It was a dirty job but, hey, somebody had to do it. Ask a Slave is a satirical comedy that included, word-for-word in many cases, questions and interactions I had during my year and half in that job. Ask a Slave launched in 2013, and immediately earned praise in the Washington Post, the New Yorker, BBC World, NPR, MSNBC, Jezebel, Slate, LAWeekly, and the like.

I am writing a book as a follow-up to the series. And a follow-up to my life since that fateful upload. It is creative non-fiction. In it, I am delving into matters of collective and individual black identity, as shaped by the narrative of American history. To have an identity, you have to have a past, or personal history. That is essential to knowing who you are. So, how is the black identity shaped by the narrative we are given about our collective American past, in which our history is not only mired with loss and trauma, but often fragmented, misrepresented, or completely ignored? These are ideas and questions I have been considering ever since the day I put on that 18th Century yellow dress and stepped onto the path of the slave quarters at Mount Vernon.

For the book, I am traveling all over the United States to sites that are concerned with interpreting early American History to the public. Here are some of the places I have visited so far:

Philipsburg Manor, NY
Royal House and Slave Quarters, MA
Phillis Wheatley Monument, MA
Whitney Plantation, LA
Le Musée de f.p.c. (The Museum of Free People of Color),  LA
Sotterley Plantation, MD
African American Slave Burial Ground, NY

I am asking for support to continue and expand my travels. Hopefully, with your help, I will get to add Barbados and West Africa to my list.

**To clarify, the book is the "creation". So when it says you are signing up to give "per creation" it is just once for this book.**

Thank you!

Goals
$266 of $3,000 per creation
To support travel to several more early American history sites -- including sites in the mid-West like Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia, Big Rapids, Michigan and The Museum of the Cherokee Indian on the Cherokee Reservation in Oklahoma (7,000 black slaves walked the Trail of Tears). So far I have gone to seven places, and I would like to expand beyond North and South.
