Waldir Pimenta That "Understanding Money" playlist is really great. For those wondering, you don't actually need to watch all videos in full (3.5 h). The first 2 videos (50 minutes each) are particularly remarkable, and dispel a bunch of myths even economists (and, not surprisingly, bankers and those who deal with them such as governments) have about what money is, how it comes to be, and the consequences of the current widespread monetary policies in the economic activity. The 3rd video is mostly for explaining the current crisis -- and while certainly informative, I honestly didn't find it as interesting as the rest of the talk which provides a more general historical overview. The fourth video is more of a summary, but wouldn't stand on its own, IMO. So if you don't have 3.5h available, I highly recommend watching only the first two. It's really worth it!

Waldir Pimenta Yay, it seems we're reaching the phase of "...then they fight you..." :D That's progress ;)

Dario Aw man, you seriously rock! :'| "Students focus on school. Parents focus on kids. Communities focus on each other. These are the effects of unconditional cash transfers. the results are already in. Basic income works." --- Who were the control groups? (I'll read the full report later, but since it's fresh in your mind.. :))

Scott Santens Thanks, Dario! Here are the details. This program targeted the ultra-poor, and they did this by giving money only to those households that had no one fully able to be a primary earner. From the report, they used the following criteria: - There is no adult between the ages of 19 and 65 in a household; - There is an adult between 19 and 65, but he or she is not able to work because of a chronic illness or disability; or - There is an adult between 19 and 65 but that person is not able to work because he or she is caring for at least three young children, disabled, or elderly people. In other words, there is a dependency ratio greater than or equal to three to one. So what they used as a control were those who were just as poor, but who didn't meet those criteria. 18 years old and earn $10 per month? Here's your cash. 19 years old and earn $10 per month? No cash for you. Poor mother of three? Here's your cash. Poor mother of two? No cash for you. Because of these conditions, it was not an actual basic income pilot experiment, where cash was universally given to all, but the cash was given to about 8% of the population, and among that 8% it was an unconditional cash income sufficient to cover basic needs, that they could use on anything they wanted, in any way they wanted.

reivan Nice video! I'll share it with my Brazilian friend. Few things could be improved (for better presentation): better microphone, slightly quieter background music.

Scott Santens Thanks, yeah, I wish I had some kind of sound studio, nicer mic, better video creation tools, but I've got to work with what I've got. Windows Movie Maker is pretty weak, and I added the music from within YouTube which doesn't offer much volume control. Still, I figure at least it's out there, and maybe someone else can use the image album itself to make something more out of it.
