William Wilson This is wonderful. As JB takes off with this beautiful song in a flood of reverb, subtle arranger James Rose has the other parts explore various harmonic possibilities, slowly descending through the notes of the scale, toying with minor to major and back (twice) and with all the voices piling up gradually into a glorious orchestral-sized resolution in bar 16. What a feat and only possible to realise with something more nebulous than a conventional score. Just how did you do it? I fell in love with this song when Les Parapluies de Cherbourg first came out in 1964 and had the good fortune to meet director Jacques Demy and his wife Agnès Varda – lovely people. I’m sure Michel Legrand (now 83) would love this version of one of his best songs. Well done gang. We’re looking forward to the album.
