Last year´s referendum result left us in a precarious position. We have lived in Spain for 14 years. My son was planning to take a psychology degree in Murcia but was nervous of any Spanish grants crashing during a 5 year course. He chose instead to take a free two-year course to obtain Grado which can then count towards part of the University Course and would also give him a minor working qualificaton. He still hopes to do University at the end of these two years. While we were in the EU there was no problem in getting similar grants to Spanish students. He will therefore have to naturalise to get these rights back. This costs a few hundred and takes a couple of years on average. Given the current situation I would like to naturalise also within the next few years. Again there will be similar costs and delay. I don´t want to stay as one of Theresa May´s bargaining chips who will be disenfranchised as she takes us out of the EU. Starting cost for each naturalistaion is 300 for forms and exams, more if we use lawyers to speed things up. Some people spend a thousand. The final amount depends on what bureaucracy is encountered en route. Sometimes officials accept rough translations of documents like birth certificates but if we encountered difficult officals certified translated copies of documents might be needed which will add to the costs along the way. Son´s naturalisation needs to be started fairly soon. I have more time. If Brexit is cancelled by some miracle any money generated for this can be spent on the options below instead. 300 would start off the work for son´s naturalisation which is the more urgent one.
