I went out landscape painting with some friends yesterday, for the first time here in Simrishamn. The picture above is how the painting looked when I got home. I was not happy about the horizon line, it felt a bit to even, so today I made some changes and ended up with the picture below, which I am much happier about.

The composition in this picture is pretty straight forward. With the house and the path coming out at its left as the focal point, I made all the lines meet up there: the tree lines, the path line, the grass line and the cloud line. 

Hopefully there will be more opportunities for plain air painting soon!

These three small studies are made with a limited palette of only four colours. Mixes of red, yellow ochre, black and white can be used for a lot of things, and although you cannot really get those powerful greens, yellows and blues you can still make it believable as long as the values are correct.

The last week I have spent moving to Simrishamn, in the very south of Sweden. And today, first day of school, I spent moving in to my school studio at The Swedish Academy of Realist Art. 

The school has also just moved into this building (it is a very nice one, you can view it in my facebook feed if you're curious) in Simrishamn. My first two school years the school was located in Stockholm, but for several reasons Simrishamn is now becoming its new location.

And today I started my third and final year as an advanced student! I will keep you updated on what happens right here, in this spot, from now on. For a start I am painting an apple - preparation drawing is taking form on the easel.

Yesterday I put the finishing touches on the last of these Umeå landscape paintings, and today I spent framing them for my upcoming local solo exhibition that starts on monday 10th and shows until sunday 16th of August.

Now they are ready to meet the world - and you are the first to know! In a few hours I will be heading for the exhibition space to put them up on the walls.

Several of these motifs are from my six kilometer long bike ride back and forth between home and my work at the library. It is very convenient to pass the same view a few times to figure it out. When I see an interesting motif I can spend some days passing by, watching it change and finally decide what view and time of day would be the nicest for my painting. The weather is very unpredictable though, but I need to put up with that. :-)

In between two showers of rain I just barely managed to squeeze in a painting session down by the river today. Here is a pic from a work in progress from Umeälven, the river that divides the city of Umeå in two halves. At the boardwalk along the river there is a bench nicely situated with this view.

In a week or two I will post some finished landscape paintings from Umeå.
